One Piece Live Action (OPLA) fans won’t want to miss this announcement: Roronoa Zoro is finding his way to Anime Pasadena! On Thursday night, Anime Pasadena announced that Mackenyu, known for playing Zoro in the OPLA, will be appearing Saturday and Sunday only during the convention.
Created by Eiichiro Oda in 1997, One Piece is one of the most popular manga/anime franchises of all time, winning awards such as “most published comic book series by a single author” from the Guinness World Records in 2015, and beating its own record in 2022. The franchise has gone on to produce an anime with more than 1,100 episodes, 15 movies, video games and a Netflix live-action series.
One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy in the live action), a rubber boy with a dream of becoming the King of the Pirates. Luffy assembles a ragtag crew known as the Straw Hat Pirates, and they sail through the Grand Line in search of the ultimate treasure known as the One Piece.
Mackenyu’s character Zoro is the first crewmate Luffy meets and is a core cast member of the show. In addition to One Piece, he has portrayed many anime characters in live-action versions. Some of his roles include Scar in Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge of Scar / The Final Alchemy, Arata Wataya in Chihayafuru and Enishi Yukishiro in Rurouni Kenshin: The Final.
