Akiba Maid War Café ‘Ton Tokoton’ in LA’s Little Tokyo

The Akiba Maid War Pop-Up Café “Ton Tokoton” opened on June 28 in Los Angeles, California. It will only be open for a month, with the final show scheduled for July 28. Beware of the cute pink decorations and the charming piggy maids; this is different from your typical maid cafe. Their Oinky Doink Live Porkformance stage was full of action, adventure, and drama!

Akiba Maid War is an original anime series directed by Sōichi Masui, written by Yoshihiro Hiki, and produced by Cygames and P.A. Works. Sentai Filmworks licensed the series. Akiba Maid War follows Nagomi Wahira, who has just moved to Akihabara to pursue her dream of joining a maid cafe. She lands a job at Ton Tokoton, the Oinky Doink Cafe, and soon uncovers the intense and cutthroat side of maid cafes. Despite all the hardships, Nagomi is determined to do her best to make Oinky Doink Cafe the best in Akihabara! Akiba Maid War is available to stream on HIDIVE and Blu-ray from Sentai.

Akiba Maid War Pop-Up Café

Prepare to be part of the action at the Akiba Maid War Pop-Up Café! As you step into the cafe, your maid greets you with a warm welcome, setting the stage for an interactive and engaging experience. Maid Sumi, with her infectious energy, brought our experience to life by teaching us how to perform magical maid spells to enhance our food, taking photos, and drawing characters on our bentos. The cafe offers three meal and drink options, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Oinky Doinky Food

  • Porker’s Omurice, includes drawing service! (Ham Omurice)
  • Heart Kyun! Curry (Chicken Curry Rice)
  • Piglet Cutlet Bento, includes drawing service! (Tonkatsu Bento)

Oinky Doinky Smooch! Drinks

  • Oinky Doinky Drink (Our special soda w/taste-enhancing spell included!)
  • Piggy Pearl Iced Coffee
  • Oinky Doink Water

I went with the Oinky Doinky Drink, in which maid Sumi used special magic to turn my soda peach-flavored! Others at my table had different-colored drinks, so I wondered if the flavors were all the same or if there was a bit of a fun mystery element when ordering this drink. I had the Piglet Cutlet Bento for the entree, which included a special drawing from my maid! I told her my favorite animal is a whale, so she drew this adorable whale for me!

Oinky Doink Live Porkformance

About halfway through our dinner, the music cut on, and the lights dimmed as the maids all took to the stage for a fun, action-filled stage that plays homage to the anime by incorporating moments of joy and moments of intensity just like the anime and shows the struggles and rewards of being a maid. The event rating is PG-13 as some of the contents of the maid cafe may allude to violent imagery.

Thanks to the charismatic maids and attentive staff, I had a PORK-tastic time at the Akiba Maid War Pop-Up Café! I enjoyed the layout and liked how the tables were in four groups. It made all the interactions personable, and it felt like we all had moments to interact with our maid and feel special! If you’re in the L.A. area (or down to travel like my tablemate did from Mexico), come check it out before it’s too late!

The cafe is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays except for July 8. You can visit on weekdays from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on weekends from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Remember, tickets are available by reservation only. Weekday sets range from $25 to $45, while Weekend Shows range from $60 to $80. Also, seating for the weekday cafe reservations is on a first-come, first-served basis.
