Welcome to the weekly review of Spice and Wolf (2024). Here, we’ll recap what happened in the latest episode, break down some of the economic talk, and discuss the differences between the anime, manga, and light novel. Let’s get started with episode Spice and Wolf episode 13.
Recap: "Supper of Three and Afternoon of Two"
Spice and Wolf episode 13 opens on Lawrence, Holo, and Norah celebrating their gold smuggling success. Lawrence and Norah seem to get along very well. They share stories and tell jokes, while Holo looks on with a small hint of jealousy. But just as she’s about to partake in the meal, her vision gets blurry and she faints. As she dreams, she recalls her life in the village, the endless days, the constant tedium, and the apathy that grew as a result. She reflects on her time with Lawrence and how much fun it’s been compared to her old life. As she wakes, Lawrence enters the room and scolds her for not telling him sooner that she wasn’t feeling well. The two share a moment and Holo drifts to sleep again.
The next morning, Lawrence tends to Holo’s health and even gives her a short medical lesson. She falls asleep once more, concluding that her time with Lawrence has truly been precious. She looks forward to every day at his side. That evening, Norah comes to visit, and she and Holo share an inside joke at Lawrence’s expense. It ends with the two figures from the start of the series, and the white haired one begs Holo to continue the story.
Review of Spice and Wolf Episode 13
This was a pleasant surprise. A nice epilogue to the arc that explores the characters’ relationships and sneaks in a broad recap of the past 12 episodes. It was also nice to tie in the added scene from the first episode. Very poetic capping the start and end of what is essentially a first cour of the series with the same framing device. In previous versions, this little epilogue with Holo getting sick was an OVA included with the DVD release of the 2008 anime. It was not originally included in the airing schedule.
From the light novels, this story is titled “Wolf and Amber Melancholy.” It was included in the first Side Colors volume, a series of short stories exploring the world and other characters beyond Holo and Lawrence’s journey. The manga has the closest resemblance, ending volume 6 with an adaptation of this little side story. Regardless, this episode nicely summarizes not only Holo’s journey until now, but also her true feelings, which will play a big part in the arc to come. Onward to greener pastures and more financial investment.
