After another nearly year-long hiatus, fans of the Hunter x Hunter manga can breathe a sigh of relief, as it has been teased by the creator that the series will soon resume.
Hunter x Hunter began serialization in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1998, and has been running on and off ever since. It has spawned two separate anime series, the first of which aired from 1999 to 2001, while the second aired from 2011 to 2014.
Hunter x Hunter Manga
The story follows a young boy named Gon who wants to become a Hunter. A Hunter is a licensed professional with an immense array of potential pursuits, including treasure hunting, exploring and discovering, and hunting lawbreakers. Gon wishes to find his father, a legendary Hunter, who disappeared when Gon was very young. He faces many challenges and adventures on his path, and runs across numerous friends and companions as well. It is an iconic manga, from its art style to storyline, and has a vocal fanbase to this day.
Despite having begun in 1998 and still being considered ongoing, the Hunter x Hunter manga only consists of 400 chapters. Over the years, the series has gone on several extended hiatuses. Series creator Yoshihiro Togashi has confirmed that he struggles with chronic back pain, which has made it difficult for him to work on the project. The longest hiatus began in 2018 and lasted just shy of four years, with the series not returning until late 2022.
Return of the Manga
This latest hiatus began at the end of 2022 after only ten new chapters. It was announced at the time of the break that the manga would no longer be released as a weekly serialization upon its return. While Yoshihiro confirmed back in March that the 401st chapter had been completed, no further information has been released since.
However, Yoshihiro took to X (formerly Twitter) on October 1st to tease his return to the series with a photo of draft papers from the writer’s work desk and the English words “start over” as a caption.

While the post does not provide any details in terms of the timeline, it is exciting news to know new content for the manga is in the works. With this confirmation that the creator is back at his desk, fans can rest easy that there is still in fact more Hunter x Hunter on the horizon.
