Sakura Cosplay Guide: How to cosplay Sakura from Naruto

Sakura Haruno, a vital member of team 7 from the popular anime Naruto, is known for her rosy pink hair and her variations of her signature outfit through the years. She dresses in red and pink, which perfectly offsets her pink hair and bright green eyes. As she progresses in age and in her skill as a ninja, she adapts her red outfit into different looks that match her life stage. Sakura is the personification of strength and versatility, and her outfit choices are always stylish and practical enough for her training to increase her strength! We put together a Sakura cosplay guide for anyone wanting to dress up as this incredible character.

About Naruto and Sakura Haruno

The Naruto series comprises three anime, Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, and Boruto. Sakura Haruno is featured in each series as a pivotal character, who trains alongside protagonist Naruto Uzumaki. From the beginning of Naruto, Sakura joins Naruto and fellow-ninja trainee Sasuke, in Team 7 where they begin their journey to develop their jutsus and become some of the strongest ninjas the Hidden Leaf Village has ever seen.

Sakura always stands out with her bright color choices and hair, and her loud personality. Through the series, her pink hair goes from long to short, and her red dress becomes a vest. Regardless of her outfit choice, she can consistently be seen wearing her Hidden Leaf Village engraved headband, her kunai knife in a pouch on her thigh, and shinobi open-toed shoes.

Sakura Cosplay: Signature Outfits

Throughout the Naruto series, younger Sakura wore a red qipao dress with a white circular design in the middle. The dress had two slits on the sides, and she wore black fitted shorts underneath. On her right thigh, she wore a pouch that contained her kunai knife. To tie the entire look together, she wore her shinobi headband and dark open-toed shoes.

Later in the series, Sakura wears a version of her old red dress as a vest, and a shorter pink skirt to match. At this point, her hair is now short and still held back by her red shinobi headband. As her ninja training and missions have become more vigorous, she wears pink elbow protectors to match her skirt, and black gloves. Her once ankle-length shinobi shoes reach just below her knees.

When she becomes an adult, Sakura can be seen in more typical ninja attire. She wears black pants, a black long sleeved shirt, and an army green vest to cover it. Her kunai is still strapped to her thigh, and she wears her original ankle length shinobi shoes. This look offers her more versatility and blends with typical fashion for her ninja rank at the time.

In the Boruto series, adult Sakura wears a red qipao top with a similar design to her dress as a child, and light pink cropped pants. At this point in the series, she strays from her old headband and shoes to wear a thin red headband and black open-toed platform sandals. She wears a thin metal bracelet on each wrist. Most notably, her forehead is marked with a purple diamond mark, as the result of a certain justu (that I won’t spoil!).

Hair and Makeup

Sakura’s hair goes through a big transformation length-wise in an iconic scene where she bravely cuts it off during a battle. Her bright hair stays consistent throughout the anime, even as the length changes. To emulate her hair for a cosplay, you will most likely need to purchase a wig of either her long or short hair depending on the outfit. If possible, some even use temporary dye and style their own hair.

Here are some matches that could work as options for Sakura cosplay wigs:

There is some freedom with Sakura’s makeup, as each cosplayer can decide how similar they want to look to her. Sakura usually has a light pink lip color, and her eyebrows are pink to match her hair. She has bright green eyes that can be emulated with bright contacts, and black eyeliner and mascara can make the color pop! Depending on which look of Sakura’s is being cosplayed, the purple diamond mark on her forehead can also be achieved with makeup.

We hope that this Sakura cosplay guide can help cosplayers emulate her bright and iconic looks! Have fun, and your love of Sakura will shine through!
