At school, Yoshiki and his classmates are making karaage, and Yoshiki recalls the first time he reached inside Hikaru. Hikaru, noticing Yoshiki’s intense expression when touching raw chicken, asks if Yoshiki wants to reach inside him again. Yoshiki agrees, however, things go south when Hikaru’s tendrils try to make their way inside Yoshiki’s mind. Yoshiki immediately recoils and explains to Hikaru the concept of boundaries and that he shouldn’t make someone else uncomfortable for Hikaru’s own satisfaction. Later, Yoshiki’s classmates discuss the Wig Ghost, a spirit that revealed itself to Yoshiki’s sister and frightened her. Hikaru offers to check out the bathroom and get rid of the spirit. Yoshiki waits for hours; however, he rushes in once he hears a crash in the bathroom and is dragged into the bathtub by the Wig Ghost. Soon after, the Wig Ghost takes over Yoshiki’s mind, forcing Yoshiki to fight Hikaru. Hikaru manages to get the Wig Ghost out of Yoshiki’s mind, and he feels guilty for not being able to protect Yoshiki. Yoshiki then apologizes for the bite mark and scratches on Hikaru. In the end, he wonders if Hikaru will be able to live a normal life or if he’ll end up killing him one day.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this episode had me uneasy and on the edge of my seat in the best way possible. I didn’t expect the Wig Ghost to be that strong, and seeing Yoshiki attacking Hikaru was a huge shock. However, it was nice to see Yoshiki and Hikaru act like regular kids and hang out with their friends. I do hope that the anime gives us more small moments like that in between the horror elements with the spirits. I also wonder if the anime will expand on why the spirits are so attracted to Yoshiki; is it because of Hikaru? Or something else entirely? Either way, this anime continues to pull me in, and I can’t wait to watch the story develop.

The Summer Hikaru Died anime is available to stream on Netflix and the manga is available for purchase on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble.
