Crunchyroll’s ChatGPT Scandal Causes Controversy Among Users

When Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show premiered on Crunchyroll earlier this week, fans rushed to watch the new series. However, viewers quickly noticed an embarrassing issue with the anime’s subtitles.

A Bluesky user took their complaints to the social media platform on July 1, 2025, stating:

“Beyond disappointed to find Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show's subs on @crunchyroll.com are blatantly and openly ChatGPT. This is not acceptable. How can we be expected to pay for a service that clearly doesn't care about the quality of its products?”

Typically, a dedicated localization team is responsible for translating episodes into various languages. This was clearly not the case for Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show. Instead, its subtitles were generated by ChatGPT, a popular AI tool.

Multiple instances of mistranslations and other mistakes were found in the English and German versions. Some of the most blatant examples reported include, “Translated by: Translator’s name” and “ChatGPT said”. Other errors found were incorrect character names and locations, as well as improper grammar.

The initial Bluesky post quickly gained traction, and viewers flocked to social media to express their dislike. Many were upset with the lack of human oversight needed to ensure accuracy in the show’s translations before being released to international audiences.

Generative AI is, for the most part, disliked by fans, creators, and others within the anime industry. With its popularity growing worldwide, many creatives are fighting against its usage in media and art forms. An effective method commonly used is to boycott any and all work identified as AI-generated.

Under the Microscope

The subtitles came as a shock to fans, especially after a recent interview with Forbes, where Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini claimed, “We are not considering AI in the creative process.” The article, published in April of this year, notes Purini’s disclosure of AI testing. Its purpose was to improve content recommendations and new anime discovery for users; aiming to enhance user experience, but not altering the content itself.

According to some reports, a Crunchyroll insider has allegedly confirmed that a third-party vendor created the subtitles for Necronomico and The Cosmic Horror Show. The company was also reported to be investigating the situation, noting that ChatGPT subtitles blatantly violate the platform’s agreements with its vendors. Should the information about the third-party mishap be true, Crunchyroll could potentially lose numerous subscribers and viewers due to the misuse of artificial intelligence. Until the investigation concludes, subscribers are awaiting further information from Crunchyroll.

Crunchyroll has already begun correcting the mistranslations and errors in Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show. At the time of publication, noticeable errors, such as “ChatGPT said:” have already been removed.
