Ever wanted to see what prehistoric Pokémon look like in real life? Want to channel your inner paleontologist? Well, grab your Explorer Kits, it’s time to travel to The Grand Underground (or in this case, Chicago)!

The Pokémon Fossil Museum will open in May 2026 and take over Chicago’s Field Museum. The exhibit first began in Japan, and this will be the first time it appears outside the country.

The museum will compare prehistoric Pokémon like Tyrantrum and Archeops to Sue the T. Rex and the Chicago Archaeopteryx. Other fossil Pokémon featured in the exhibit include Aerodactyl, Omanyte, Omastar, Bastiodon, Anorith, Yanmega, Rampardos, and many more. Some Pokémon will have life-size models, and others will have infographics breaking down their anatomy.

Trainers of all ages are invited to visit the museum. This exhibit is designed to teach fans about the similarities and differences between prehistoric animals in the real world versus the Pokémon world.

About Pokemon

Pokémon takes place in a universe where humans and Pokémon (“pocket monsters”) co-exist. People interact with Pokémon in different ways: Some keep them as pets, and some train them to battle.

In the original series, Ash Ketchum is a 10-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a Pokémon Master. With his trusty partner Pikachu, Ketchum and Pikachu travel the world to battle other Pokémon trainers, make new friends, go on adventures, and work toward his dream to be the very best.
