Last time, on “The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World!”
Princess Teltina asked Togo, and Yihdra, to help her find and eliminate mana seeds. Her attendant, the Hero Lowji Mist, challenged Togo to a duel to prove his strength. After Togo wins, the group traveles to the town of Akalina. There, they meet Lord Loulogart, who used the mana seed to oppress his people. Togo tried to attack, but he’s outmatched by Loulogart’s familiars. How will our heroes make it out of this?
Episode 4 Recap
Before the familiar can strike, a smoke bomb allows the group to escape with the help of a resistance force. Led by a new character, named Grossa, the resistance seeks to end Loulogart’s rule and reclaim their town. Togo eagerly agrees to help but first they need a plan. Yihdra explains that their best option is for Togo and Lowji to fight together, but their teamwork leaves much to be desired.
Later that night, Yihdra and Teltina share some bath time and express what they admire about each other. Then Teltina meets Togo and they talk about their reasons for putting their lives on the line. Lowji overhears them and grows jealous of their familiarity. In an attempt to make Togo look bad, Lowji steals his transformation equipment.
The next day, Lowji and Togo confront Loulogart, but Togo is unable to transform. He’s flung into a nearby moat, leaving Lowji to fight alone. Lowji holds his own, using the various forms of his Holy Sword to fight. However, when Teltina tries to call him back, she becomes a target, and Lowji uses his own body to defend her. That’s when Yihdra joins the fray and creates a barrier to give them time to strategize. Lowji admits to stealing Togo’s equipment, and after some cheesy words of encouragement, the two fighters are able to coordinate and defeat Loulogart. However, the mana seed takes over Loulogart’s body and begins expanding. It creates a giant sphere that threatens to crush Akalina and everyone in it.
Final Thoughts
The conflict in Akalina is a great setting to get to know more about the characters. However, this episode does have its shortcomings. Grossa, the resistance leader, made a brief appearance in episode 3 and feels a bit under-utilized. All she does is establish extra motivation that feels a bit redundant given the stakes. The bath scene felt forced but it was ultimately harmless. It was just there for fanservice, though Togo and Yihdra’s totally-not-romantic relationship, is still a source of comedy. Teltina subtly rooting for them, adds some chaotic fun to it as well.
Finally, the pacing could have been smoother in the second half. There were a lot of pauses in the action to explore backstories. They did help explain character motivation, especially for Lowji, but they could have been structured in a way that didn’t interrupt the flow of combat. Then again, Yihdra’s struggle to maintain her barrier, while everyone talks, is a nice tongue-in-cheek jab to the drawn out dialogue. It only works because of the many interruptions.
The biggest takeaway from episode 4 was Lowji’s character. His attempts at being a dutiful knight are comically undermined by his warped personality. His sword being named after the seven deadly sins is a clever allusion to this. Once his backstory and motivation is revealed, it makes him more sympathetic. He shares a genuine bond with the princess that Togo approves of. Even so, Lowji’s jealousy is a nice character flaw that paves the way for a reluctant team up. Strong and clashing personalities is what makes this quartet of characters so entertaining to
