Last time on “The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World!”
Yihdra and Togo confronted a couple of disgruntled adventurers. They attempted to settle their differences with a contest to take down a mystery monster. Instead, both parties emerged with newfound respect and mutual understanding. Unbeknownst to them, two new faces emerged from the woodwork.
The Red Ranger, the Hero, and the Princess
The episode opens on a comedic note. Upon hearing that Togo will be living in Yihdra’s mansion, her butler threatens to deprive Togo of his youthful vigor. From the front door, comes salvation in the form of Princess Teltina Avallost, and her attendant, the Hero Lowji Mist. Viewers will remember these two from the end of episode 2. Here, they appear before Yihdra, to request her help while she is tracking and confiscating mana seeds. They infest a host, and greatly amplify their mana output, granting them Privilege Spells that fall in line with their deepest desires. To make matters worse, it’s possible that the current Royal Scepter, Shau’ha may be connected somehow and is using the backing of the royal family to distribute mana seeds to corrupt nobles.
Togo and Yihdra agree to help but Lowji rejects them. His pride as the Hero, and obsession with the princess, won’t allow him to accept any aid. Especially from a stranger like Togo. This exchange results in a duel. Togo transforms into Kizuna Red, and summons Maximum Kizuna Kaiser, which dumbfounds Lowji. Surprisingly, the hero is able to stagger the giant robot with the power of his Holy Sword. In the end, however, Red wins by devastating Lowji with a swing of his Great Bond Sword. Lowji reluctantly concedes and the four adventurers set out on their first mission.
Onward to Akalina
They make their way to Akalina and are following rumors of a mana seed. Once they arrive, the usually bustling town, known for never sleeping, is silent and devoid of merriment. The lord of the town, Lord Loulogart, reveals that he is in possession of a mana seed. He ignores Princess Teltina’s command to relinquish it and preaches about his power to protect and guide the townsfolk. Togo’s righteous heart can’t abide this oppression and he instigates a fight. However, he is quickly outmatched by Loulogart’s familiars. The final scene is Togo’s transformation breaking, as he watches the final blow descend upon him.
With the introduction of Teltina and Lowji, an awesome cast of lovable goofballs has been assembled. Interestingly enough, it’s almost as if they are reflections of Togo and Yihdra. The two men are fiercely loyal to their respective women, but Lowji is more selfish, and embodies the typical fantasy hero trope. Togo is more outgoing and reflects the tokusatsu hero trope. Meanwhile, Yihdra and Teltina seem similar enough, but Teltina is able to control her man, unlike Yihdra. She also gets excited when first seeing Togo’s abilities. While Yihdra, just sighs in exasperation. In the end, this group dynamic is very fun to watch and hits just the right balance of silliness and serious.
Final Thoughts
The plot and story are shaping up nicely. Even if there aren’t many deviations from pre established fantasy and isekai narratives. The biggest twist to the formula is the inclusion of tokusatsu tropes, and so far that has worked in the show’s favor. It’s mostly used for comedic effect, but there are dramatic moments that fall in line with typical tokusatsu writing.
Seeing the protagonist not immediately have overpowered abilities is also a nice change of pace. For all his bravado and posing, Togo does struggle quite a bit in this new world. His powers can only get him so far. Having characters who already exist in this world, with powers on par with his own, makes for good contrast and keeps the action fresh. Also, if the opening episode is anything to go by, there will be plenty of action to come!
