The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World Episode 2

Last time on “The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World!” Asagaki Togo, aka Kizuna Red, sacrificed himself to defeat the dreaded Break-Up King. Instead of perishing, he was transported to another world where he became an adventurer helping those in need. There he met Yihdra Arvoln the archmage. Her goal is to reclaim the position of Royal Scepter and use magic to bring happiness to the people. Moved by her dream, Togo promises to assist her in any way he can. What new obstacles await our heroes? Let’s find out in this recap and review of The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World episode 2!

The Red Ranger Episode 2 Opens on a Comedic Note

Episode 2 opens with a comedic scene as Yihdra discovers Togo is deathly afraid of needles. After a little ruckus in the guild hall, they inspect their stat tags, items that prove their adventurer status, and keep track of their skills. Yihdra’s is formatted like a typical RPG stat sheet, but Togo’s looks like a magazine-exclusive character bio, which baffles Yihdra. It’s a nice touch to further emphasize how foreign Togo’s origins are to this fantasy world.

Yihdra’s confusion is interrupted by a pair of adventurers named Zatsu and Lain. Previously, they answered Yihdra’s request from episode 1 but were soundly rejected. Now they’re back and take their frustrations out on Yihdra, calling her a washed-up noble and her father a coward. Yihdra fires back with insults of her own. Before they can come to blows, Togo suggests they settle their dispute with a quest. A strange monster has been running amok in a nearby dungeon. Whoever can defeat it first wins.

The next few scenes are filled to the brim with details poking fun at various tokusatsu tropes. For example, Kizuna Red’s transformation explosion has already been established as a diegetic effect. That is to say, characters and objects react to it in real-time. In this case, the noise it produces attracts a horde of minotaur. Our intrepid adventurers are just barely able to fend them off. Then, Kizuna Red summons his ace in the hole: Maximum Kizuna Kaiser, which promptly gets stuck in the cave. Not an entirely unexpected outcome, but the comedy of seeing a giant robot stuck in a hole never gets old. It did manage to crush several minotaur, so it’s a win-win.

Continuing with the Tokusatsu Tropes

As the fight continues, some banter between Zatsu, Lain, and Yihdra foreshadows a nice redemption. First, they must defeat the mystery monster, a hulking giant with a bone-like exoskeleton. This design feels like it was inspired by tokusatsu monster suits. It’s easy to imagine an actor donning a black leotard and strapping on the skeletal accouterments. We’re treated to another homage to tokusatsu when Kizuna Red has a flashback to his home world. There, the Kizuna 5 used another of their signature weapons to defeat one of the Relationship Ender’s Break-Up Fiends. Back in the cave, Kizuna Red summons the very same Victory Kizuna Buster. With the help of Yihdra, Zatsu, and Lain, they line up the shot and fire. But the blast splits down the middle.

In a hilarious twist that’s still completely on brand, Red explains that the Buster will misfire if there is hostility between the people operating it. Classic tokusatsu often preaches the merit of teamwork and believing in each other. It only feels natural for their finishing move to have conditions as vague as “connecting your hearts.” For it to fail almost immediately is icing on the comedy cake. With their backs against the wall and Kizuna Red down for the count, Zatsu, Lain, and Yihdra finally put aside their differences. Moved by their selflessness, Togo finds the strength to transform again. With the hostility in their hearts replaced by understanding, the four properly activate the Victory Kizuna Buster, defeat the monster, and strike a victory pose.

After the excitement dies down, the monster transforms into a priest with a strange bump on his forehead. The adventurers carry him back to the Guild. Zatsu and Lain bid farewell, which leaves Yihdra and Togo a moment to reflect on the moral of the episode. Then she attempts to continue her examination of his powers. Meanwhile, the priest who had been resting in the Guild, sneaks out into the streets as if possessed. He transforms back into the monster, but is defeated again, this time by a blue-haired swordsman and pale-haired priestess. They remove the seed from the priest’s head and declare they will save the world. Who are these individuals? What purpose do the seeds serve? And what threat awaits beyond the horizon? Final Thoughts on Red Ranger Episode 2

“The devil is in the details” as the saying goes, and “Red Ranger” episode 2 proves it can get the details right. Every nod to tokusatsu superhero television, from Togo’s stat tag to his flashbacks framed like episode recaps to the mandatory explosions and posing, demonstrates a lot of love for the genre. With that love comes a self-awareness that the show constantly exploits. Maximum Kizuna Kaiser getting stuck is one example, and the Victory Kizuna Buster misfiring is another. What makes these moments work is Togo’s straightforward and honest demeanor being perfectly balanced with the other characters’ baffled interjections.

It feels like it would get old, but the writing keeps the pace up. There is enough material to keep the non-tokusatsu viewers engaged. It also helps that the other characters have stakes beyond Togo’s presence. The quarrel between Zatsu, Lain, and Yihdra is a pretty standard “don’t judge others too quickly” story, but that simplicity gives everyone a chance to shine. It also gives Yihdra some nice character progression. In the next episode, there are two new characters to look forward to. Also, the opening promises more baddies for Togo and Yihdra to face. More action and comedy await!
