Bird Feather and Mysterious One
Hoping to find more information about Yoitsu, Lawrence asks his friend Marc about any chroniclers in the city who would have old stories from the northlands. Marc says he knows someone who might and tells him to wait at the Rowen Trade Hall. Once there, Lawrence is approached by Amati, who offers to show him around town. Lawrence declines but mentions Holo would love to have some company, and Amati eagerly obliges.
Lawrence meets Marc’s contact, Batos, who leads him to a walled section of the city. After navigating the dark streets, they meet Diana, a lover of old stories and legends. She does not know the location of Yoitsu, but recounts a legend from a town called Lenos. It speaks of a great wolf who loved wine and brought bountiful harvests. Lawrence thanks her for the information and tells legends of his own in exchange. Afterward, Lawrence joins Marc for a drink, and hears the gossip going around about his lovely companion and Amati.
The next morning, Lawrence is dismayed by how many gifts Amati bought Holo, including a piece of pyrite that was marketed as a ward against misfortune. Suddenly, Marc’s apprentice comes knocking with an urgent message. Upon hearing the news, Lawrence runs off in a hurry.
Review of "Spice and Wolf" Episode 15
This episode definitely had its ups and downs, and for some hardcore fans, it could likely feel a little repetitive at first. The layout and order of events are nearly identical to episode 2 of season 2 of the 2008 version. Some moments have been shuffled to create a more cohesive narrative. Where this season really stands out is the art direction. The backgrounds are standing out more and more, and they go a long way to make the city feel lived in. It’s clear a lot of time has gone into the details.
The exterior shots, like at Marc’s shop, feel busy and lively without feeling claustrophobic. The walled section, on the other hand, where Diana lives, has an eerie and closed-off vibe. The interior of her house was particularly striking, with clutter filling the space in a chaotically organized way. In the end, the biggest advantage the 2024 version has is modern animation techniques, and it’s taking full advantage of them. Next time, Lawrence will be fighting a battle on two fronts with no room for error.
