The classic ‘80s/‘90s manga and anime Ranma 1/2 is getting a brand new anime series!
Ranma 1/2 author Rumiko Takahashi posted a teaser video on her X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday about the new series. More information about the updated series will be revealed on July 17 at 6 p.m. Japan Standard Time on the Ramna 1/2 X account.
Ranma 1/2’s Creation
Popular mangaka Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyahsa, Urusei Yatsura) created the Ranma 1/2 manga in 1987, which ran until 1996 over the course of 38 volumes. Studio DEEN picked up the manga to produce an anime adaptation of the same name, and it premiered in 1989. Although initially canceled due to low ratings, the show was reworked and rebranded into Ranma Nettōhen, running from 1989 to 1992 over the span of 143 episodes. The franchise also produced a 12-episode OVA series, a live action, multiple video games, and three anime films. As of 2021, Ranma ½ has about 55 million manga copies in circulation.
About the Series
Ranma 1/2 follows Ranma Saotome, a 16-year-old male martial artist who has trained in the art since he was a kid. One day while training with his father in the Bayan Har mountain range in China, he falls into a cursed spring, resulting in him turning into a girl when splashed with cold water and back into a boy when splashed with hot water. His father also becomes cursed by falling into a different spring, but instead turns into a panda. Not only does Saotome have to deal with this curse, but also an arranged fiancée who doesn’t seem to like him. Plus, Saotome keeps getting into fights. It’s not easy being Ranma Saotome.
Ranma 1/2 can be streamed on Hulu.
