The original voices of Lawrence and Holo are back to reprise their roles in the new Spice and Wolf English dub! J. Michael Tatum, known for Black Butler, Attack on Titan, and My Hero Academia, voices Kraft Lawrence. Brina Palencia, known for Fairy Tail, One Piece, and Borderlands, voices Holo the wise wolf. It is such a joy to hear these voices again in these roles, after 16 years no less. Time will tell if other characters will retain their actors.
"Spice and Wolf" English Dub
It is interesting to compare the 2008 dub to the 2024 dub. Lawrence and Holo may sound the same in both versions, but Tatum and Palencia have found new ways to perform them. In the 2024 dub, Lawrence is much more soft spoken, probably to appear more amicable, but also because his solitary travels don’t warrant a lot of talking. Holo speaks much more eloquently, using old English vernacular to reflect her long existence. Like old friends meeting again, there’s something new to discover every time. I’m eager to see how these actors will revisit the old and reinvent the new.
About the Series
Kraft Lawrence had always dreamed of opening his own shop, but a traveling merchant has to take deals wherever he can find them. One such deal comes to him in the form of Holo the Wise Wolf. Worshiped as a god of bountiful harvest, Holo grew weary with life in the village, where her presence was reduced to mere stories and superstition. Luckily for her, Lawrence can’t say no to a pretty face, so they strike a deal; Lawrence will travel with her to see her northern homelands and she will use her wit to repay him for his services. What adventures and business opportunities await this merchant and wolf god?
Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf is a remake of the 2008 anime series of the same name. Both are based on the light novels series written by Isuna Hasekura.
