Review of “Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again” Episode 3

Grandpa Shozo and Grandma Ine are in for a surprise in Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again episode 3! Titled Grandpa Turns Old Again, Grandpa Shozo accidentally reverts to his physical age. Shozo and Ine have the same dream about a large hourglass, and when Shozo accidentally flips it, he becomes his old self again!

"Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again" Episode 3

This show continuously gets better with each week. Unlike previous episodes where there are too many unrelated stories with one loose theme crammed into one episode, Episode 3 intertwines each story beautifully, with most scenes relating back to Shozo’s age reversal and the continued challenges the couple faces as a result of their magical aging / de-aging.

Reality sets in for the family, especially Ine, following Shozo’s age reversal. Now that Shozo has become old, the family worry about the state of his health. Ine eats mame daifuku away from Shozo in order to be considerate (and fearful) of his old illnesses potentially coming back. She struggles with this fear of dying alone. She believes not only will she outlive him, but also her kids and grandkids.

I longed for more backstory about the Saitos’s love story in the beginning of the series, and my wish was granted with the flashbacks of their first interactions, all of which were very fitting and well interwoven for this episode. We see Ine’s past and how she longed to fit in with relatives she lived with after her parents died. Then, later meeting Shozo as a result, justifies her fear of losing family and Shozo.

Overall Thoughts

Shozo delivers a powerful and emotional speech to Ine by the end of the episode that will not leave the audience with a dry eye. He reminds Ine that they are not eternal, and they will not outlive their kids and grandkids by the looks of the hourglass, which has cracked. He ends the speech by saying “Grandma, you’re the one person I’ll never leave behind. Don’t you worry.”

This series has quickly transformed itself from a silly story about grandparents becoming attractive young adults with the energy and strength of 20 year olds, to a more mature take on the reality of growing old, having regret, losing family, illnesses, and eventual death. Now that the Saitos know the significance of the hourglass and the power it has to rewind, how will they continue to live their lives knowing any day could be their last?
