The final episode of the highly anticipated Shibuya Incident Arc of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime aired on December 28, marking the end of an intense and action packed season of the show. However, fans quickly received the news that many were hoping for: an adaptation of the next arc of Gege Akutami’s best selling manga, titled The Culling Game arc, has been confirmed.
The Culling Game Arc
After a total of 23 episodes, and a turbulent year at MAPPA, the animation studio behind the anime, it wasn’t a given that another season of the extremely popular show was going to be confirmed quite so quickly. MAPPA has faced a lot of criticism from both inside and outside of the studio for its working conditions and extreme demands of its animation staff. Besides animating season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen this year, the studio also released the final episodes of Attack on Titan and the second season of Vinland Saga (which included 24 episodes by the end). A few new projects for the studio were also announced at this year’s Jump Festa, including a second season of the anime Hell’s Paradise and a feature length film for the series Chainsaw Man, the first season of which they released last year. However, none of these titles, including the Culling Game arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, have received release dates yet. So, it is possible MAPPA will be spreading out the releases a little more going forward.
The official Jujutsu Kaisen website released a very brief synopsis of the next season, as well as a 20 second teaser video using the art from the original manga. The teaser shows Yuji Itadori square off against Yuta Okkotsu, the protagonist of the 2021 film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, who made his debut in the series in the final episode of season 2. The teaser also confirms that MAPPA will remain as the animation studio on the project.
Due to the other projects on MAPPA’s slate, and the time it usually takes to put together a season of anime, Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 will likely not be released until 2025 at the earliest, but no timeline has been announced yet. More information can be expected in the coming months, as well as further information on other anime series and movies coming out of MAPPA. For now, the first two seasons of Jujutsu Kaisen are available on Crunchyroll, and the manga series it is based on is ongoing.
