A brand new series by Toei Animation is coming to the Dragon Ball franchise next year. Titled Dragon Ball Daima, the series will follow child versions of the iconic and beloved characters fans know from previous Dragon Ball media.
Dragon Ball DAIMA
The news was revealed at the Dragon Ball panel on the first day of New York Comic Con, and was accompanied by a trailer. The trailer kicked off with a recap of the franchise so far, starting with a nod to Akira Toriyama’s original manga, which began running in 1984. The manga went on to spawn a massive, ongoing media empire – the original Dragon Ball anime ran from 1986 to 1989, the follow up series Dragon Ball Z ran from 1989 to 1996, and several other animated series, films, video games and spin off manga have been released over the years. The most recent anime series, Dragon Ball Super, wrapped up in 2018, and an anime film called Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was released as recently as 2022.
The impact the media franchise has made in popular culture cannot be overlooked, with the characters, fighting moves, and general style being some of the most recognizable anime content even for those largely unfamiliar with the medium. The manga is one of the best selling and most influential of all time, and is often cited as inspiration by manga artists who came after. The fact that a new series is gearing up for release almost forty years after the original manga began shows the staying power of the story and the characters.
Dragon Ball Daima will have an original story and character design by series creator Akira Toriyama. While little has been revealed regarding the plot of the show, the trailer shows off a lot of the new chibi-like designs for the characters, including Goku, Bulma, Vegeta, Piccolo, and many others. No official release date has been announced yet, but fans can expect the show to premier in the fall of 2024.
