Everything You Need to Know About Armored Mewtwo’s Pokémon GO Return

After six long years of waiting, Armored Mewtwo finally makes its Pokémon GO return! Now long-term players can’t flex that they have Armored Mewtwo!

Armored Mewtwo appears for the Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale on Saturday, September 5, and Sunday, September 6. However, Armored Mewtwo will only appear in five-star raids from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time, so be sure to grab all your friends and head to the gyms. Note that no shiny Armored Mewtwo is available yet.

The Pokémon GO Fest 2026 aligns perfectly with the Pokémon World Championships, Pokémon GO’s 10th anniversary and Pokémon’s 30th anniversary!

The fan-favorite Armored Mewtwo is nothing new to Pokémon fans, seeing as it debuted in the 1998 film Pokémon: The First Movie. In that movie, Mewtwo gets armor placed on it by Team Rocket leader Giovanni in an attempt to halt Mewtwo’s unmatched psychic abilities.

Fast forward over 20 years, the Pokémon returned in a remake of The First Movie, now called Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution in 2019. Shortly after the film’s remake premiered, Armored Mewtwo appeared in Pokémon GO raids for a short time and has not been seen since. Well, not until this weekend, of course.

How to Defeat It in Raids

To obtain an Armored Mewtwo in-game, you first need to defeat it in the raids. Pokémon GO recommends working in groups of at least six to eight in raids. Additionally, if you’re unsure of which Pokémon to choose for your raid, here are a few options to make battling easier:

  • Necrozma
  • Mega Mewtwo X and Y
  • Mega Tyranitar
  • Mega Gengar

Now, if you don’t have any of those Pokémon, don’t worry! Check out Reddit for remote raids or local meetup spots in your city to join bigger groups of players! Additionally, if you don’t have the Pokémon listed above, pick ghost-, bug- and dark-type Pokémon, preferably legendaries.

Until the raids begin, check out Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution on Netflix to get a sneak peek at who you’ll be battling in raids. Good luck getting the Armored Mewtwo to all Pokémon GO players!

  1. This is so cool😊 I caught a Armored Mewtwo today while having at least 4 to 5 attempts at a single gym with a friend and it took until the last attempt at the Sonic Panel where it took me and 14 other players with my friend that where we beat the Armored Mewtwo and caught it after 20 seconds😊
