The hit sensation, The Apothecary Diaries, is growing in a big way! The fan-favorite series is getting a movie adaptation! The historical mystery drama anime set in an imperial court inspired by ancient China is set to grow come December 2026, as officially announced by TOHO Animation.
Background
Receiving its first feature-length adaptation, The Apothecary Diaries, based on the light novel series written by Natsu Hyūga, is scheduled to premiere in December 2026. The feature will focus on an entirely new story with Hyūga providing the story concept. Longtime series architect Norihiro Naganuma will serve as director, previously serving as series composer and director for Season 1 and chief director for Season 2. TOHO Animation Studio and OLM are also set to return in the development of the story, serving as the series production and management.
The newly unveiled teaser is focused on Maomao’s gaze, ringed by rolling flames, reading: “The finest mysteries shimmer within those eyes”. The hint of drama sets the tone for future events to come. Maomao is set, determined to face new challenges beyond the Imperial Palace and reveal new secrets.
More About The Apothecary Diaries
The Apothecary Diaries tells the story of a girl named Maomao, a young jade-haired petite woman from the red-light district. She grows up in the brothel district with her adoptive elderly father, who is more than he appears. Maomao’s eccentric and pragmatic attitude aids her well as she employs her extensive knowledge of poisons and herbal remedies as a tool while being forced to play within the rules of palace politics after being kidnapped and sold into service as a palace servant.
Maomao’s unique personality and wit catch the eye of Jinshi, the most beautiful person in the empire, who is also a powerful and enigmatic palace official. Jinshi, the younger brother of the Emperor, serves secretly as a eunuch who is the influential administrator of the Inner Palace. His flawless, otherworldly beauty is a skill to effortlessly charm both men and women, helping him to manipulate situations. Jinshi inwardly despises being reduced to just his pretty face, finding Maomao’s resistance quite curious.
Maomao’s sharp skills, intelligence, and distanced personality capture Jinshi’s interest as he draws her into a world of political intrigue, royal secrets, and dangerous conflicts. Maomao’s plans to simply survive become outweighed by her desire for knowledge as she repeatedly places herself at the center of trouble.

The series is beloved because of its blend of mystery, historical drama, romance, and character-driven storytelling with a slight emphasis on humor. Its appeal comes from Maomao’s unusual personality. She goes against the grain, hiding her beauty to outwardly highlight her analytical, blunt demeanor alongside her obsession with poisons. Maomao’s relationship with Jinshi develops slowly through their contrasting personalities, revealing a more dramatic, needy, and compassionate side of Jinshi as he becomes increasingly intrigued by Maomao.
Across its first two seasons, the story explores ancient palace politics, family secrets, imperial social hierarchy and consequences, expanding beyond individual mysteries to hidden histories.
What to Expect
While the Japanese release date has been confirmed as December 11, 2026, the international and USA release date has not been announced. With the split-cour arc developed, there is almost a silent promise we will see the movie before part 2 arrives in April 2027. Fans are encouraged to await future details and prepare for what is sure to be another sensational story plot.
