Bleach Cast Panel at Anime Riverside 2026 Official Review

It’s the fifth annual Anime Riverside 2026, with the first panels of the day up on the main stage: Bleach. The anime has spanned over two decades, 17 seasons, 400-plus episodes, two specials, four movies, a live-action adaptation and don’t even get us started on the manga. The English cast panel provides in-depth insight into the voice acting industry, heartwarming stories, and motivational speeches that have touched so many lives throughout the years. Let’s pause the evil spirits fighting and guide some souls to the front row, because it’s time for the Bleach Cast panel, only on Anime Fire.

The Cast Panel

For this panel, we had Johnny Yong Bosch (Ichigo Kurosaki), Michelle Ruff (Rukia Kuchiki), Doug Erholtz (Gin Ichimaru & Kisuke Urahara) and Steve Staley (Tōshirō Hitsugaya & Shuhei Hisagi), with Renee a.k.a BlackGeekChronicles as the moderator. Having been voicing these characters for the last 22 years, they discuss how whole new generations of fans are discovering the show and how it’s been affecting their lives, the relationships between actor and character, and what to look forward to for the future of the series.

"I Wish I Could Live Life Five Times Over."

For the first question of the panel, Renee wants to know if the actors have noticed the rise in popularity of the series and, after two decades, how it feels to see a whole new generation discovering the show now. Michelle’s response sums it up with having four generations of fans sitting right in front of them is just amazing to her. Both Steve and Doug are in agreement that they had no idea that they’d still be working the series after so many years, even though the anime wasn’t so easily accessible back in the early 2000s. Each of them was in utter amazement to find out that multiple generations of fans had been watching this whole time.

"...Friendship's Always a Fine Thing to Have."

Considering how much they’ve spent with their characters, Renee asked whether their [the voice actors’] relationship with their character or characters has changed over time. Steve’s response had been the most humbling, by which most of all is looking forward to change. All these many years, his character Toshiro has been this century old figure that still looks like he’s ten, But, what they have coming is this huge change (in reference to the upcoming film), he doesn’t outright acknowledge that something in fact is about to change, but that change is about to happen, and that he wants that change to affect his character specifically. We think in retrospect, he really wants his character to at least physically look like the age he is.

"Would I Still Be Able to Say 'I Love You' the Same Way I Do Today?"

For this question, Doug really felt it the deepest when asked if there were any scenes that were unexpectedly emotional to record. He began with how Gin Ichimaru had a very emotional moment when he shivved Isane (Kotetsu). He (Doug) knew that Gin had this secret because in the series he always had this poker-faced look about him the entire time, and then when he turned on Isane, in that very moment he thought, “OH MY GOD, THAT WAS IT!”

That was the secret that he’d been hiding the entire time; that Gin was playing the long con to finally get close enough to Isane, to get through his defenses, and he thought he had (he hadn’t obviously). Doug thought what had dawned on him was that this entire time Gin was doing it for Rangiku (Matsumoto) and Doug was like, WOW! It was so powerful because there’s this very slick character that is very much a poker face, and finally we see that there was an emotional belly to him, which made it kind of worthwhile, as an actor, getting to see that secret finally fulfilled, which was so cool.

"I Want to Protect a Mountain-Load of People."

Renee’s final question is what hope the actors have for their fans to take away from their character’s journey. Johnny subtly put it that there’s a lot of of things in there that he thinks deep down with Ichigo, it’s like he would do anything to protect his friends or his family, and he thinks that there’s something important in there, and we can take it any way we want, but he thinks it’s important to care for people, and put yourself, not necessarily in harms way, but to do whatever you can to protect those who you love.

A reference comically repeated (mostly by Doug) throughout the panel for Bleach: The Thousand Year Blood War – The Calamity, which is set to premiere in the U.S. in 2026 with a limited theatrical screening between June 25-29, both dubbed in English and Japanese. It will consist of the first three episodes of Season 4,conclude the anime adaptation manga arc created by Tite Kubo, and will set off the events leading towards the continuation of Season 4, which will be released for streaming in July.
