Once a year, one of Osaka’s most famous streets is flooded with cosplayers of all shapes and sizes. For 6 glorious hours, people congregate in Nihonbashi Den Den Town to celebrate cosplay and otaku culture. The highlight is the maid cafe and cosplay parade. 500 participants display their passion as they walk down Ota Road, flanked by thousands of onlookers. Here’s my experience at Nihonbashi Festa 2026!
An Otaku Oasis
If you’re a fan of anime and want to visit Japan, Nihonbashi Den Den (Electric) Town is a must-stop. Hundreds of storefronts, big and small, some spanning over 5 floors, cater to every kind of hobby. From models and Gunpla, to trading cards and figures, to VTubers and idols, to maids and butlers, to anime and manga. Shoppers are spoiled for choice, and it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Such was my first reaction, but I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to witness one of the biggest gatherings of cosplayers.
On the day of, I arrived early and purchased a photographer’s wristband. This gave me access to photoshoot areas closed off to the general public. Even before the parade, cosplayers were lined up on the surrounding streets, posing for pictures. It is no exaggeration to say practically every fandom was represented. Dragon Ball and Pokémon rubbed shoulders with Star Wars and Marvel. It was incredible being surrounded by that much passion and dedication, especially with the early onset of summer weather. There was plenty to see otherwise, like a booth promoting the new anime by studio GoHands, “The Exiled Heavy Knight Knows How to Game the System.” Many of the shops also offered discounts and special deals, making the trip that much more worth it.
The Main Event
I made my way over to the main street, and already, people were lining up along the parade route. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to see past the heads and parasols, but I did find a convenient spot towards the starting point. There was a stage set up for the opening ceremonies. Lots of thanks and acknowledgments were given before the parade finally got underway. Leading the pack were, I assume, members of the Nihonbashi Street Festa Executive Committee and special guests. They were followed by a procession of maid cafés promoting their businesses. It was amusing to hear die-hard fans shouting out to their favorite maids.
Finally, the cosplayers marched down the street, and what a sight to behold. Cameras lined the crowd as hundreds of cosplayers flaunted their styles. Some of the anime I saw represented were The Apothecary Diaries, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, SpyXFamily, Kamen Rider, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Gintama, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K, One Piece and so much more. Some sections of the parade were dedicated to joint properties, like Studio Ghibli, the Resident Evil games, Dragon Quest and my personal favorite, Overlord.
Photo Shoots
The photographer’s wristband I had purchased allowed me access to photo shoot areas reserved for cosplay purposes. People had brought entire camera setups complete with reflector panels and stands. Meanwhile, there I was with an iPhone 13 Pro, shyly asking for pictures or just sniping them from afar. The nearby Namba Parks Mall breezeway was packed with cosplayers and photographers. As dedicated as the cosplayers themselves are, never underestimate the dedication of a photographer getting that perfect shot. Another location was basically a rented-out parking lot. People were literally forming lines to photograph their favorite characters. Had I more time, I would have photographed every cosplay I could find. If you ever get the chance to attend Nihonbashi Festa, take it! It is well worth the trip!
