Grab a surfboard and some mana potions because it’s time to save a nation from total annihilation. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, the anime concludes its third season with an all-new feature, Tears of the Azure Sea. Demon Lord Rimuru and his company of friends rest up at a resort island, only to uncover an ancient prophecy. A high priestess turned thief steals the legendary Dragon’s Bane, a flute used to command the mighty Aqua Dragon meant to protect the underwater kingdom of Kaien, in order to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. Now Rimuru’s much-earned respite is put on hold while he faces a nation’s downfall from within, hidden enemies, and a close companion fights the hardest challenge he’s ever faced: saving the woman he loves. This movie is so incredible, it’s positively oozing with power!
Legends of a Lost Age
After the events of the Jura-Tempest Federation’s opening ceremony, Demon Lord Rimuru and his crew rewarded themselves with a vacation at Celestial Emperor Hermesia’s resort island in the Azure Sea. Lady Yura, the water priestess and the last remaining descendant of an ancient people, holds onto the old ways of venerating the Aqua Dragon, which, in doing so, keeps the dragon from waking, forever protecting the kingdom through its own absence. As time went on and the other kingdoms started settling on land, the kingdom of Kaien was left alone underwater.
The old ways, and the dragon, were being forgotten, not in terms of forgetting its existence, but rather the dragon’s purpose. Few prayed to the dragon, and with Yura’s lineage dwindling down to just her, any political power she had had began to wane. Mysterious attacks from an unknown nation became routine, forcing the king to call upon the power of the dragon.
Love on the Lam
Djeese, the king’s consigliere, saw his opportunity to seize power over the dragon and oust Lady Yura from her position. Yura knew the dragon was meant to protect the kingdoms, not be called upon to attack someone indiscriminately, so stealing the flute that commands the dragon seemed like the best option. But the best part about the film wasn’t the politics; it was about Gobta landing the girl of his dreams: Yura.
When Gobta first encountered Yura, she was acting shady because she was still evading capture for stealing the flute. They both had to separate from Rimuru and the others in order to hide from Djeese’s trained henchmen and their leader, Zodon. Even though they were trying to blend in at the resort to avoid capture, Gobta gave Yura an opportunity to be just a normal girl. Having been someone of importance for so long, she never had a chance to just be herself, much less fall in love.
Turns out, Peace was Always an Option
Well, not to spoil the whole film for you fine readers, so we’ll break it down to the short version: Djeese wanted the power of the Aqua Dragon to rule the kingdom of Kaien, while Zodon wanted the power to rule the world. Yura wanted the power to stay right where it was, to do what it was meant to do, which was to protect all the kingdoms. As long as the Aqua Dragon stayed asleep, everyone would be safe. It was her lineage that was able to control the dragon via the flute.
Djeese couldn’t keep it under control and lost, while Zodon was so blinded by the power he had through marrying Yura, which somehow passed her power and control over the dragon onto him; he didn’t see his downfall until it was too late, defeated by none other than the power of love. The moral of the story is: if you don’t want the world to be destroyed, leave the ancient power of prophecy alone. Oh, and if you were wondering where Rimuru was in all this, because Gobta and Yura were the center for most of the film, Rimuru was actually sidelined until the end when he applied the finishing blow to Zodon, but not without Gobta giving him the opening shot.
