Anime Las Vegas offered up a great experience in having a small cast reunion for My Hero Academia! Monica Rial, the voice of Tsuyu Asui, and Anairis Quinones, the voice of Mirko, sat down and talked about the experience of working on the series and what it means to them now that the show is over.
How They Discovered Their Character’s Voice
Monic and Anairis were first asked how they created and developed their voices for their characters when they first started recording. Monica said she took major inspiration from the Japanese voice actor for Tsuyu, Aoi Yuki. She took those notes and created the first interpretation, which was a little higher-pitched at first. During one of her first sessions, was when it was decided she would lower the pitch a little bit, and thus her iconic voice for Tsuyu was born.
Anairis said she also took some notes from the Japanese voice performance of Mirko by Sayaka Kinoshita. She added that she was also a fan of Dragon Ball Z and the deeper, more guttural performances for the characters in that series. She applied that to her Mirko voice and was happy that type of voice fit Mirko’s whole vibe.
What Makes Froppy and Mirko Good Heroes?
They were then asked what they think their characters think makes a good hero. Anairis answered that Mirko thinks being a good hero means getting the job done, no matter the cost. She added that Mirko even demonstrates this when she loses her leg and arm in Season 6 and still fights as well as in season seven when her other arm gets bitten off by Shigaraki.
Monica says Tsuyu thinks it is more than just beating villains and showing strong empathy towards others in need. Monica then said Tsuyu would also think it isn’t just saving civilians, but also other heroes who are in desperate need of help and have each other’s backs in the field.
Emotional Scenes for their Characters
The duo was then asked what scenes for their characters were the most emotional for them. Monica said that for her, it was when Ochaco and Himiko Toga had their emotional and climactic final battle. She loved how it showed that Froppy, who had a supporting role in the beginning of that fight, was doing her best to reach the airborne Ochaco to help her, but couldn’t get to her and had to watch as her best friend worked to quell the villain’s rage-fueled rampage.
Anairis said that for her, it was really just any scene that showed Mirko’s determination and tenacity since Mirko didn’t have much screen time compared to the other characters. She mainly used the raid on Garaki’s lab and the battle against Shigaraki at the Coffin in the Sky. She said those two battles truly were shining moments for Mirko and showed how determined she is to be victorious in her endeavors.
Overall Thoughts
The My Hero Academia panel was truly a fun time, and the answers both Monica and Anairis gave for their answers were very insightful and entertaining. The enjoyment they both shared in making the show was evident, and they shared the sentiment with the fans that although the series is over, the impact it had on everyone will still be felt long after. Overall, the panel was a great time and was such a fun way to reminisce on the memories from the show’s entirety.
