In the Wake of the Storm
It seems the story has entered its denouement. With the world at relative peace, several loose ends need tying up, though that may just lead to more questions.
SPOILER WARNING
Thanks to Maru’s cursed technique, the souls of the cursed spirits are set free. Yuka is released from her binding vow with Mahoraga and seems healthier for it. Dabura returns to the Rumelian’s home planet to exact retribution on the Deskunte chief.
Meanwhile, on Earth, Maru and Cross face their Simurian council to decide what to do with the kalyans. In their words, the kalyans may no longer be able to recognize the color of the Simurians’ souls. This means the next generation would be at risk of attack. It’s a huge upset to their society, but a consequence that Maru and Cross are ready to bear.
An End? Or a Beginning?
And so begins another lengthy conclusion to an otherwise good story. On the one hand, I appreciate that Akutami (writer) is willing to break the status quo of his world. The elimination of cursed energy, the driving source of conflict throughout the series, is a drastic shift. Readers have gotten used to comparing and analyzing cursed techniques. With that aspect of the story gone, one has to wonder if the series can hold onto its identity.
On the other hand, I get the feeling that the ending may overstay its welcome. There are certainly a number of loose ends to tie up, the least of which is the surprise cameo at the end. Thinking back to the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen, the lengthy denouement was meant to reassess the world and the characters. Their experiences left them changed, but their hearts were steadfast. In Modulo, with cursed energy now a thing of the past, the ending feels very idyllic. Perhaps a new revelation or a familiar face will throw a wrench into things.
The question remains: how will the world adapt to this sudden shift after decades of relying on cursed energy? The true effects of Maru’s decision may not be felt until the next generation. In which case, what will life look like until then? Catch up on the story by visiting the official VIZ Media manga webpage for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.
