A Whirlwind of Activity
In the latest chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, the fights for the fate of Earth and the Simurians rage on. A supporter appears from the wings, and new developments in the fights shake up the flow of battle.
SPOILER WARNING
Yuji Itadori has finally reappeared, but chooses to offer support from the sidelines. He dispatches the sorcerers, Simurians and rogue cursed spirits, all so that no one interferes with the Okkotsu siblings’ fights.
Dabura discovers the secret to using the reverse curse technique to heal his wounds. Then he channels that positive energy into his own cursed technique. It fundamentally changes what he’s capable of, but he still can’t put down Mahoraga. At the same time, Tsurugi summons the Split Soul Katana, previously used by Toji Fushigoro and Maki Zenin. With it, he’s able to bypass Maru’s defenses.
Easy Come, Easy Go
There are so many tidbits of lore sprinkled throughout this chapter that wouldn’t have been possible without Jujutsu Kaisen’s legacy. Yuji’s cursed techniques, which he’s inherited from his foes, Dabura discovering the reverse curse technique and even Tsurugi making use of Rika’s storage ability. It’s a real “what’s what” of Jujutsu Kaisen trivia.
Yuji seems to be following in the footsteps of Gojo. He is undoubtedly the strongest sorcerer in Japan, but he seems to interpret that role as its own curse. He seems incredibly disillusioned, opting to let others take the reins and intervening only when absolutely necessary. I’m interested to see what he does next.
Chapter 20, in my opinion, demonstrates one of Akutami’s (writer) greatest strengths and greatest weaknesses. His fight scenes are incredibly engaging, weaving character and plot details into the action to make every clash feel important. It’s easy to follow the progression of the fight and clearly understand what’s at stake. On the flip side, layering so many details and developments runs the risk of burn out or boredom. These fights began back in chapter 14, over 7 weeks ago. That’s a lot of time to expect readers to stay engaged with a single conflict. Akutami tries to keep it fresh with new additions, but it’s reaching the point of becoming too bloated for its own good. Then again, JJK Modulo is meant to be a shorter series, so the pacing may work out in the end.
There’s been a huge shift in the flow of battle for both fights. Tsurugi and Dabura look like they’re about to turn the tables. Meanwhile, there seems to be more to Yuji’s involvement than meets the eye. Catch up on the story by visiting the official Viz Media manga webpage for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.
