SPOILER WARNING!

Dabura channels his cursed energy into his own body to achieve sub-light speed. The toll it takes is excruciating, but the exhilaration of fighting with all his might fills him with joy. Dabura even figures out how to use reverse cursed techniques to heal his injuries. Mahoraga, however, is not so easily bested.

Meanwhile, the Japanese sorcerers begin an operation to contain cursed spirits fleeing the Tokyo quarantine zone. The Simurians also take action, still under the impression that the cursed spirits need to be protected. A clash inevitably breaks out on the ground. It’s quickly dispersed by none other than Yuji Itadori, with a surprising technique.

Chapter 19 was a bit lighter compared to previous chapters. The fight between Dabura and Mahoraga continues to heat up. Iwasaki’s (artist) art really shone through. They used a very creative method to demonstrate Dabura’s newfound speed and even incorporated the panel layout into the depiction. The shot of Dabura’s kick struggling to push through the air, combined with the masterful flow that guides the reader’s eyes through every movement, is nothing short of brilliant.

After Mahoraga adapts to Dabura’s speed, he heals his ruined leg with the reverse curse technique. I got a good chuckle out of Dabura’s inner monologue, piecing together how to use cursed energy to heal himself. It brings to mind Gojo’s declaration during his fight with Toji Fushiguro. That speech has become a bit of a meme, and to have it referenced here, even implicitly, was a fun treat.

This chapter also introduced what the Japanese government and Simurians are doing while these fights take place. It’s like Akutami (writer) knew that the readers needed some extra plot to keep them invested, and this development feels perfectly natural for the world and circumstances. It’s also a great way to get Yuji back into the story. And he’s apparently refined the “Piercing Blood” cursed technique, something he gained towards the end of Jujutsu Kaisen.

With Yuji back in the picture, maybe we’ll see some more familiar faces. It seems the story is gearing up for some kind of big event that’ll determine the fate of Japan and the Simurians. Catch up on the story by visiting the official Viz Media manga webpage for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.
