Teenage angst and dragon powers? What could possibly go wrong? The beloved slice-of-life manga about a moody teenage dragon girl, Ruri Dragon, is getting an anime adaptation by none other than Kyoto Animation.
On December 28, 2025, Kyoto Animation posted a video thanking fans for their continued support into the new year and beyond. They wrapped it up by announcing their first-ever collaboration with Shonen Jump, an anime adaptation of Ruri Dragon. The project is still a ways off, likely not airing until 2027, but fans are still hyped. The short teaser animation is enough to convince anyone that Masaoki Shindo’s work is in good hands. The author even shared a commemorative illustration on the anime’s official X (formerly Twitter) page. The news also coincided with the titular character’s, Ruri’s, birthday.
Synopsis of Ruri Dragon
Ruri was just an average teenage girl. Coasting through life, trying not to draw too much attention to herself. Then she grew horns. Like, what? As if fitting in wasn’t hard enough, now she learns she’s the daughter of a dragon. Well, dragon or not, she still has school. Naturally, she’s the center of attention now. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing will be up to her. Every day life just got a whole lot more complicated.
Ruri Dragon began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2022, but was put on hiatus due to Shindo’s health. Two years later, the series returned to the magazine before transitioning to a biweekly schedule on the magazine’s digital platform Shonen Jump+. The manga has received widespread praise for its cute artstyle, quirky expressions, and laid-back tone. Its biggest selling point is the natural dialogue and casual approach to accepting differences. It takes its time to explore its fantasy premise from a new, almost mundane, perspective. It’s the perfect series for slice-of-life fans and readers looking for something different but familiar.
