The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 7 Review

Yoshiki and Hikaru spend the day as most teenagers do: going to the arcade and eating sweets. Hikaru enjoys spending time with Yoshiki and experiencing the smaller things in life for the first time. Despite the perfect day, it quickly spirals out of control, shattering the grand illusion of normalcy between Hikaru and Yoshiki. By the end, both boys reveal parts of themselves to one another so easily, and launch an investigation into Hikaru’s origins. Here is the seventh episode review of The Summer Hikaru Died.

Yoshiki and Hikaru play hooky on the day of the Choir Concert happening at school, spending their day at the movies, eating ice cream and going to the arcade. Hikaru questions Yoshiki about being mad at him for what happened the other day with Asako, but Yoshiki reassures him that he’s not mad. As the day turns to the evening and the boys head back to Yoshiki’s house, the boys watch a video of the choir concert. However, the tranquil moment is ruined when Yoshiki suddenly stabs Hikaru.

Yoshiki apologizes; he was convinced that he could teach Hikaru to be different and wanted his last memory to be fun. Yoshiki then asks Hikaru to kill him. Hikaru, in a moment of panic, reaches inside and pulls out a piece of himself. He explains that, while he can’t understand the value of a human life, he made himself smaller to make killing people harder. Hikaru explains that Yoshiki feels like home and Yoshiki promises to stay with Hikaru no matter what, even if something inside of him breaks. Yoshiki tells Hikaru that he isn’t meant to be here and that they should do research to find out what exactly he is.

This episode made me anxious with how wholesome it had started out. While it was nice to see Yoshiki and Hikaru spend time together doing normal things, it was unexpected to see Yoshiki so easy-going. So willing to make Hikaru happy, even though he had planned to kill him from the start. And to see Hikaru so willing to give up a piece of himself and call Yoshiki home was hard to watch. With the next episode being their investigation into what Hikaru is, I wonder if their paths will finally cross with Tanaka and bring some much-needed drama into the series.

The Summer Hikaru Died anime is available to stream on Netflix, and the manga is available for purchase on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble.
