Yoshiki’s and Hikaru’s relationship hits a sudden roadblock, revealing that Hikaru isn’t as human as he desperately tries to be. A sleepover between classmates quickly spirals out of control, and reveals a shocking discovery about one of Yoshiki and Hikaru’s classmates. Both Yoshiki and Hikaru question what exactly it means to be human, and find out that their definitions have wildly different meanings. Here is the episode 6 review of The Summer Hikaru Died.

Overview

The topic of what makes someone human crosses Yoshiki’s mind as he and a few classmates discuss the story of Swampman, which involves the death of its main character and another character taking over his body and his memories. Asako Yamagishi (voiced by Yumiri Hanamori) asks if Yoshiki and Hikaru want to hang out, planning a sleepover at Hikaru’s house with a few other classmates. As the day falls to night, Hikaru and Asako offer to head to town to grab more lighters for the fireworks.

Asako asks Hikaru about his time missing, however, Hikaru admits he doesn’t remember much. Asako then asks if he’s really Hikaru, which startles him. Hikaru immediately goes to attack Asako, but is stopped by Yoshiki. Asako faints, and Yoshiki immediately asks why Hikaru would harm a human life. Hikaru asks what the difference is between living and dying. Yoshiki then asks if Hikaru was lying about not wanting to kill him. Hikaru can’t even comprehend human life, so what makes him so special?

Asako wakes up from fainting and explains that her family has always been able to see spirits. She had tried to talk to the spirit in Hikaru’s head, but was unsuccessful. She also mentioned that the spirit inside Hikaru was trying to protect Yoshiki. Yoshiki leaves the sleepover early the next morning, and Hikaru begins to question living as a human.

Final Thoughts

This episode provided an unexpected twist that I didn’t see coming. The new information that Asako could see the spirit inside Hikaru was both shocking and concerning. Now that she knows Hikaru isn’t human, it has me curious if her friendship with him as well as Yoshiki will change. Additionally, I wonder if seeing Hikaru almost attack Asako was a wake up call to Yoshiki in regards to his safety. That he’s not as safe with Hikaru as he may think, or no matter how much Hikaru tries to convince Yoshiki that he’s safe around him.

I also question if this experience changes something within Hikaru as well. Will his mentality on human life change? The story manages to keep me hooked with each episode, and I look forward to watching Netflix continue to advance the plot in later episodes.

The Summer Hikaru Died anime is available to stream on Netflix, and the manga is available for purchase on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble.
