It is time to return to Night City! Studio Trigger and CD Projekt Red have announced that a new story set in the Cyberpunk universe is in the works! Details were recently revealed as to what to expect from this upcoming project.

Anime Expo Announcement
Cyberpunk Edgerunners II was announced at this year’s Anime Expo. It was revealed the series is not a second season but a standalone sequel to Cyberpunk Edgerunners. The series will tell a fresh story, with all-new characters, set within Night City. CD Projekt also recently shared that most of the staff and crew from Edgerunners would be returning.
With the new series being a standalone sequel they will be exploring new content. David and Lucy, the main characters from Cyberpunk Edgerunners, will not appear and their fates will not be touched or expanded by the studio. The show is expected to remain in Night City. Kai Ikarashi, Key Animator, Delicious in Dungeon, will be making his directorial debut. Ichigo Kanno, Key Animator, Promare, will serve as the lead character designer. Returning crew members include producer and showrunner, Bartosz Sztybor, and scriptwriter, Masahiko Otsuka. There was no release window given, with the official social media account saying the series will come out when it is ready.
What is Cyberpunk?
For those unfamiliar with the Cyberpunk universe, it was originally a tabletop roleplaying game. As the series grew in popularity, it evolved into a multimedia franchise. The series’ popularity grew even higher with the release of the game, Cyberpunk 2077, in 2020. 2077 follows the story of V, a mercenary with cybernetic enhancements. The enhancements include the consciousness of Johnny Silverhand. As their minds begin merging, they must work to find a way to separate themselves. The game was followed by the prequel anime, Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Edgerunners tells the story of David Martinez who loses everything in a sudden tragedy. Following his loss, he decides to become an edgerunner, a high-tech mercenary. He soon becomes involved with the mysterious netrunner, Lucy.
