SAKAMOTO DAYS Episode 10 Recap

Sakamoto Days episode 10 begins with the Sakamoto family going to a bathhouse! However, an amateur assassin working the front desk recognizes Sakamoto, and plans to take Sakamoto out for the reward money. Shin and Sakamoto navigate through the hot springs and take a dip in the jet baths. The assassin, who had rigged the jet with traps, sets off a button that sends a startled Shin flying! Sakamoto however, is unfazed, much to the assassin’s displeasure.

The entire bathhouse is rigged with traps; from a sauna that sets poor Shin on fire, to a cold bath that is so cold you can ice skate on top of it. But Sakamoto is calm and collected throughout it all and is relaxed enough to play ping pong with Hana. The amateur assassin eventually gives up in trying to kill Sakamoto, and instead calls his father to take ownership of the family bathhouse. Unfortunately for him, his father refuses.

The next day, everyone is energized except for an even more exhausted Shin. Sakamoto, Shin, and Lu go out to have lunch and enjoy the peaceful serenity of the diner. Though, in typical fashion, the nice outing is interrupted. Lu Wutang, a high ranking mafia official (voiced by Howard Wang), explains that Lu’s mafia family is lacking in leadership and that they have arrived in Japan to take Lu back. Lu immediately disagrees, letting Wutang know that whoever wants her late father’s position can have it. She insists she stays working at Sakamoto’s store, and the trio gears up for a potential fight.

To their surprise, Wutang doesn’t want to fight them. Instead, he proposes a triad-style battle where the winner gets to have Lu. Additionally, Wutang mentions that if Sakamoto wins, he’ll tell him who ordered the bounty.  Shin and Sakamoto refuse, but Lu agrees. The trio follows Wutang to an underground casino where Wutang explains that whoever manages to make the most money out of thirty million yen from gambling in two hours, wins the triad. Lu is ecstatic and asks Shin to use his mind-reading powers to win. Although, there’s one problem. Shin and Sakamoto don’t know how to play any of the gambling games!

Overall Thoughts

Sakamoto Days episode 10 was fairly jarring compared to the others in terms of pacing. While there’s nothing wrong with a standard bathhouse/hot springs episode, to weave a backstory into it for a one-off assassin that we’ll more than likely never see again was a bit confusing. However, that isn’t to say that I didn’t enjoy it. Seeing the Sakamoto family finally get a chance to relax after the events of the Lab was enjoyable, to say the least. I’m very curious as to how the trio will do with gambling instead of using brute force like they always have.
