To some people, promises are sacred. Declarations of devotion that navigate a person’s way of life and guide them to put their best foot forward, or to take a step back and appreciate the life they have been given. And for Sakamoto and our newly introduced character, we learn that promises go far in shaping the person we become. Here is the review of Sakamoto Days episode 2.
SAKAMOTO DAYS Episode 2 Dives Into Family Promises
Sakamoto Days episode 2 starts with Shin praising Sakamoto’s skills from the previous episode. Aoi overhears this and angrily asks if Sakamoto is back to doing assassin work, which Sakamoto quickly denies. She threatens to divorce him and Sakamoto urges Shin to keep quiet about what they did because of a family rule. Shin asks about the rule, but Sakamoto doesn’t tell him. Shin and Sakamoto go to run errands and stop to pick up some pork buns on the way home. However, the trip quickly goes south as the pair are suddenly involved with helping Lu Shaotang (voiced by Ayane Sakura); the daughter of a mafia boss. The trio are then cornered by twin assassins, Son Hee and Bacho,. They are tasked with killing Lu and gaining the key to her family’s fortune.
Sakamoto takes them out easily. Lu asks why Sakamoto would protect someone he doesn’t even know. We are then thrown into a flashback of Aoi and Sakamoto, where Aoi chastises him for his assassin work. Much like their conversation from earlier, she threatens to leave him if he continues and jumps from a balcony. Sakamoto rushes to save her without hesitation, and Aoi tells him that he should stop his assassin work because everyone has someone who cherishes them. She then asks that he doesn’t kill anyone anymore as a family promise. The episode ends with Lu retrieving her family’s fortune and Sakamoto, Lu and Shin enjoying a bottle of wine.
Overall Thoughts
I enjoyed the introduction to a new character and desperately hope to see more of Lu as the show continues. Additionally, seeing the promise Aoi gave to Sakamoto and watching him continue to keep it shows the love he has for her, the same type of love Lu has for her parents. Knowing now what the family promise is makes me wonder how Shin is going to keep up with upholding it. This episode’s main premise focuses on promises to loved ones and the extent each of the characters goes to try and keep them. It’s an anime trope that never fails to warm my heart, especially because they always seem to do it so well. All in all, I enjoyed this episode (and rewatched it again). I cannot wait to see the next one.
Want to keep up with Sakamoto Days? The anime can be watched on Netflix with new episodes coming out every Saturday. The manga can also be bought on Amazon or Barnes and Noble and read on the Shonen Jump app.
