Written as a one-shot by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Fire Punch and Chainsaw Man dives into the lives of two teenage girls who form a bond over their mutual passion of creating art. Also, Fujimoto show the struggles they encounter as they navigate life trying to make their own stories. A sentimental story about friendship, dreams, and heartache, Look Back translates just as well on the big screen as it does in story form. This is the movie review of Look Back.
Brief Synopsis
The story of Look Back involves schoolgirl manga artist hopeful Fujino Ayumu (voiced by Yumi Kawai), who prides herself in her artistic skills and the praise that follows as her work is published in her school’s newspaper. But her high hopes come crashing down when a classmate, Kyomoto (voiced by Mizuki Yoshida), publishes their own artistic skills alongside Fujino. The difference in artistic talent is staggering. Fujino works tirelessly day and night to improve her talents. However, as graduation comes, she gives up on her dreams of being a famous manga artist. Both of their lives eventually cross and the pair hit it off. This leads to them publishing their own amateur works and even winning a contest together. However, as their popularity rises and opportunities for both girls emerge, Kyomoto takes a step back. The two girls spread out into different paths; Kyomoto becoming an art student at a university and Fujino becoming a famous manga author.
"Look Back" Review - Inspiring Storytelling
As someone who has read the Look Back manga, seeing these characters come alive on the big screen made me feel very emotional. Fujimoto’s storytelling combined with Director Kiyotaka Oshiyama’s sketchy art style and the soft piano music makes for a beautiful film that I eagerly want to watch again and again. The voice acting was also top notch. Yumi and Mizuki bring their all and give their own spins on these two growing girls. While it is nice to watch the Chainsaw Man anime or read the Fire Punch manga, seeing Fujimoto be able to compose a relatable narrative about the almost naive yet dedicated work children and even adults put into following their dreams is an incredible testament to his storytelling.
This story almost feels like a love letter to anyone who creates art, no matter what the medium. It shows the highs of accomplishment and the lows of envy. The desperation to become the best and the countless hours it takes to hone your craft. The exhilaration that follows when you create something that you think is beautiful and for a select few, the rare pleasure of achieving your dreams. All in all, whether you’re a creator or not, I believe that everyone should see this movie at least once. I hope the movie inspires them to pursue any passions they may have without fear like it did with me.
