Synopsis of "Shangri-la Frontier"

In the near future, VR gaming has taken the world by storm, but that means there’s lots of trash games out there. Rokuro Hizutome gets a kick out of conquering those games, bugs and all. After completing his most recent trash game, he decides to try the god-tier game Shangri-la Frontier (SLF). He creates a character, names it Sunraku, and jumps right into the game.

Recap of the first half of season 1

Not long after Rokuro Hizutome starts playing, he’s ambushed by Lycagon the Nightslayer, one of the game’s seven unique monsters called the 7 Colossi. After a grueling fight, Sunraku is defeated, and gets cursed with Lycagon’s Mark. It significantly nerfs his character, but it’s not without benefits. He respawns in town and follows a strange rabbit through a glowing door. In doing so, he triggers a “Unique Scenario” and arrives in Rabituza, home to the Vorpal Bunnies. The bunny who led him there, Emul, introduces him to her father, the boss of Rabituza, Vysache. In recognition of Sunraku’s “Vorpal soul,” and his fight with Lycagon, Vysache agrees to give Sunraku special training.

After defeating the next area bosses, farming for materials, and clearing Vysache’s special training, Sunraku reconnects with two gamer friends, Oikatzo and Pencilgon. “Friends” may not be the right word, but they recognize and respect each others’ skill. That’s why Pencilgon asks them to help her defeat another of the 7 Colossi, Wethermon the Tomb Guard.

She reveals that Ashura Kai, an in-game clan of Player Killers, found Wethermon’s spawn point, but were unable to defeat him. They’ve just been using the encounter to grind experience points. That doesn’t sit well with Pencilgon and she wants Sunraku and Oikatzo to help her defeat him. Sunraku gets some helpful information from Vysache, who also takes the opportunity to create new twin swords for him. Later, Pencilgon introduces the others to the NPC, Setsuna of Bygone Days. She is key to the lore behind Wethermon and triggers the EX Unique Scenario, “From the Living World with Love.”
