More grandparents are turning young again! Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again episode 8 introduces the Takahashi family.
Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again Episode 8 Recap
Granddaughter Shiori Saito meets Satoshi Takahashi, a second-year student in the medical department who’s researching the legend of the elderly turning young. Little does Shiori know, it’s because Satoshi’s grandparents have become young again, much like her own.
Satoshi introduces Shiori, Shozo, and Ine to his grandparents, Hajime and Setsu. Ine and Setsu argue about who the better grandpa is. The men also compete in various competitions to “prove who’s better,” such as a tug-of-war. Shozo’s friend Matsunosuke judges the competition, and he has some impactful words for the couples.
Episode 8 Review
While the audience is introduced to Satoshi right away, and the episode 8 title is A New Grandpa and Grandma Appear, we don’t meet the grandparents until about 10 minutes in. I love the idea of introducing characters who are also affected by this young effect. However, it felt like a lost or wasted opportunity for something greater for the series.
The two pairs of grandparents don’t discuss their struggles or experiences on screen. It is implied they do by Satoshi, however. To have characters that could have provided new information, or even voice their concerns / struggles with being young, would have been more beneficial to their purpose. Unfortunately, we were given new characters exactly like the Saitos: Two longtime lovebirds that ate a golden apple and experienced age rewind. It felt like they added nothing substantial to the series other than the fact that this can happen to other elderly people. With the following episode being about a summer festival, I’m not sure how much more we will learn about these new characters.
However, Satoshi was a great addition to the anime. He added the love-interest element to Shiori and provided information about the phenomenon of how elderly people in the area turn young every few hundred years. I hope he, like Shouta, will continue throughout the rest of the anime and discover more information about the legend.
Final Thoughts
While the new grandparents were a let down for me in Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again episode 8, it wasn’t a total loss. Matsunosuke taught the grandparents a great lesson that it doesn’t matter who’s the “better husband” in the competition, as long as the person they love most is happy. In the end, all the couples had a good time and enjoyed each other’s company during a picnic.
The end of the episode shows Ine teaching Shiori how to cook, and Ine imagines Shiori cooking as a woman, saddened thinking about how she won’t see Shiori like that in real time. The anime shows Ine’s hourglass, possibly foreshadowing Ine’s death in the near future.
New Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again episodes are released weekly on Sundays, available to watch on Crunchyroll.
