“Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again” Episode 6 Review

Our favorite grandparents are fulfilling one of their longtime dreams: Taking their long-awaited honeymoon to Tokyo! Here is our review of Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again episode 6.

"Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again" Episode 6 Recap

Shozo and Ine, along with Mino and Shouta, go on a double honeymoon/date to Tokyo. Since the grandparents are unfamiliar with Tokyo, Shouta tags along to be their personal tour guide.

The squad visits the grandparents’ daughter Akemi and her family in Tokyo. Also, the group navigates their way around this new part of the country. The grandparents get to have experiences they’ve never had before, such as eating parfait and getting their pictures taken in the photo booth.

Episode Review

With a new area comes new strangers who have never seen the Saitos and their beauty. It’s expected the grandparents will turn a few heads. Unfortunately, in Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again episode 6, the joke of people gawking over how good looking the Saitos are is getting old and past its prime (puns intended). I’m sure we will see plenty more of this throughout the rest of the series.

One emotion I can relate to the Saitos (even though I’m nowhere near 80 years old) is being overwhelmed by the change in the world when it comes to technology or businesses. Ine is used to riding eight hours on the sleeper train to Tokyo, but Japan’s shinkansen (bullet train) only takes three hours.

While it’s exciting to see the world change and adapt to new technology, there are some instances that are somber. Ine notices how much the area changes around the Central Food Mart where it’s slowed down. It doesn’t seem to have many years left in operation. We can all relate to some of our favorite stores from our childhood closing down or visiting an area we once knew well and see how much it’s changed.

We see the grandparents’ worry about being old and dying eventually. In this episode, we really see the other family members’ worries. Akemi feels like she abandoned Ine when she married and left home. The other granddaughter, Shiori, imagines what life will be like when the grandparents die. The emotions the family experiences – anxiety, remorse/regret, fear of what’s to come – are all normal emotions the audience may experience when it comes to death.

Final Thoughts

Like all episodes of Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again, episode 6 is wholesome and adorable. Shozo mentioned in episode one how he regretted not being able to take Ine on a honeymoon, and seeing the two turn one of their dreams into reality was fulfilling. Shozo’s flashback of always being at the train station to send off people to Tokyo and knowing deep down he wanted to go too, makes this trip extra sweet.

Since this episode is named the “Tokyo Arc,” and knowing the series moves on fairly quickly, I’m not sure if it will continue onto the next episode. I would love to see more of their honeymoon if it does continue, especially doing something more active to take advantage of the grandparents’ younger physiques.
