It’s official. Studio MAPPA announced the cancellation of Yuri!!! on Ice the movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE at noon April 19th in Japan.
About "Yuri!!! on Ice"
Yuri!!! on Ice originally aired from October to December 2016 and followed the story of Japanese figure skater Yuri Katsuki. Other main characters included Russian skaters Victor Nikiforov and Yuri Plisetsky. Praised for its direction, depiction of professional figure skating, and its handling of LGBTQ+ themes, the show was nominated in all seven award categories at Crunchyroll’s first Anime Awards. The show’s production staff, music, voice actors and characters won numerous awards. An original story by MAPPA, the show helped make the studio a household name to many anime fans. The studio would go on to animate shows like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Attack on Titan: The Final Season.
Almost eight years later, Yuri!!! on Ice still has a dedicated fan base who reacted to the movie’s cancellation with sadness. Many took to social media to share their thoughts, whether in their own posts or in the comment sections of others.
"Yuri!!! on Ice: ICE ADOLESCENCE" Cancellation
The movie was first announced in April 2017 at an exhibition event and was originally scheduled to be released in 2019. However, it experienced delays. In January 2019, a trailer depicting a younger Victor Nikiforov was released in Japan. The same trailer was later released worldwide in November 2020.
While not much was known about the plot of the movie, it was expected to be a prequel following younger Victor Nikiforov, ten years before the events of the show. As only one minute long trailer was ever released the involvement of other characters like Yuri Katsuki or Yuri Plisetsky was unknown, though fans speculated cameos for them and other skaters.
Speculation About the Future of the Series
Recently, several staff members of Yuri!!! on Ice have left studio MAPPA to join other production studios, including animation producer Fuko Noda. In the replies to the announcement tweet some fans expressed their hopes that MAPPA will sell the rights to the show and movie to another studio so they can continue the series. It is unknown what MAPPA plans to do with the property.
According to media, Yuri!!! On Ice’s animation producer Fuko Noda recently left Mappa studio, and has joined Chocolate Inc. as confirmed by the consultant studio itself.
