A Guide to Traveling for a Convention

With hundreds of anime or comic conventions happening around the world each year, there is bound to be one that piques your interest. Whether it be a popular voice actor or mangaka appearance, artists or vendors you want to purchase from in person, cosplay contests, or wanting to visit friends in the area to attend the convention together, there are many reasons to travel to another city or state to attend a convention.

Anime Fire has put together a guide on what to consider when traveling for a convention.

Planning Your Travel

Once you have bought your tickets to the convention of your choice, some of the first things to consider are: How are you going to get there? Is it better to make the drive, take a bus/train, or will you have to fly if it’s a few states away? There are pros and cons to each mode of transportation.

  • Driving. If the convention is a few hours away, driving to the convention may be the best option. You have an easier time bringing larger cosplay props due to available car space, and little to no chance of losing your props. You will have more freedom to explore the city and get to and from the convention, but will have to take into account gas, finding parking, parking fees, and total driving time.
  • Bus/Train. Taking a bus or train to a convention a few hours away is also an excellent option. Train services such as Amtrak are not only affordable, but allow passengers to bring carry-on and personal items, allowing for space for cosplay or con goodies (plus, you don’t have to worry about the long drive or sitting in traffic). You will have to rely on finding alternative modes of transportation if the buses/trains do not drop off close to the convention center.
  • Flying. Traveling by plane will be most efficient if your convention is hundreds of miles away or in another state. It can be one of the fastest and most convenient modes of transportation, but also pricey. With airlines, passengers have limited space with check-in bags / carry-on bags, so keep that in mind when choosing who to cosplay. You will have to rely on other modes of transportation once at your destination.

Consider Where You Will Stay

Oftentimes, conventions partner with neighboring hotels and provide a room block rate specifically for con-goers. Many times, partnering hotels will be within walking distance from the convention, though some larger conventions, such as Anime Expo, offer a shuttle service with a few of its partnering hotels. As the convention date gets closer, check the convention’s website for room block rates. Airbnbs are also a great option, but may not be as close to the convention as the hotels, and you’ll have to factor in the rideshare or parking expenses when headed to the convention.

Traveling For A Convention With Cosplay Props

Power from Chainsaw Man’s scythe. This scythe is made out of PVC pipe and can be broken into multiple pieces in order to fit in a check-in luggage.

Once you have figured out how you are getting to your destination convention, it’s time to plan your cosplays (if you choose to cosplay). Think about your character’s design and what you will need to buy/build. Does your character have wings? A scythe? Katanas? These props will need to be broken down and packed in a checked-in luggage, or small enough to fit in your car. Take note of every piece of your character’s design, because you won’t want to forget any of the pieces at home!

Here is a checklist of additional items to consider when packing to travel for the convention:

  • Cosplay outfit(s)
  • Shoes
  • Wig(s), wig stand, wig cap, bobby pins
  • Makeup and makeup remover
  • Hygiene products (deodorant, body spray, hairspray, toothbrush/paste)
  • Comfortable clothing (t shirts, shorts/leggings, sweatshirt, pajamas)

Don’t forget to account for any items from the artist alley or vendor hall that will need to be packed up!

You’re Ready!

Once you have your travel arrangements set and cosplays prepped and packed, it’s time to enjoy the convention! Travel safely, get plenty of sleep, don’t forget to eat, and have fun!
