In the latest Pokémon Day presentation, the Pokémon Company and Nintendo released a teaser of an ambitious upcoming project: Pokémon Legends Z-A!
What is the Pokémon Legends series?
With the release and success of Pokémon Legends Arceus (2022), the Pokémon company knew how successful this new spin-off series would be. Pokémon Legends was created to tell stories of each region outside of the main game, be that far back in the past of Sinnoh or in the distant future of Kalos.
Pokémon Legends Z-A is the latest announcement in this series, quickly garnering a large following with Pokémon fans. During the 2024 Pokémon Day Presents, the trailer for this newest entry snuck its way in at the end, with a smooth new logo and concept. Pokémon X & Y (2013) associated the letter Z with a mysterious new legendary, Zygarde, of which seems to be the foundation of the company’s next large endeavor.
What to Expect From Pokémon Legends Z-A?
Although most of the teaser was left to interpretation, the style made the world seem much more technologically advanced, very similar to Lumiose City, which would be in the trailer. With a new expansion plan, Lumiose City seems to be undergoing some sort of transformation, and although the trailer leaves that for later, the neon aesthetic has led many fans to believe that the game will take place somewhere in the future, with a much more modern setting compared to the previous Legends title.
There’s not much that has been outright confirmed about the game, but one addition that has is the fan favorite gimmick: Mega Evolution. With talk of new forms of beloved Pokémon and the confirmation with a simple icon at the end of the trailer, long-time trainers are expressing their love for this reintroduction.
Taking from the game before it, it is safe to assume that Pokémon Legends Z-A will be open world, with a possibility of open regions similar to the Monster Hunter series. Although that could be the case, the talk ambition comes from the idea that this new adventure in Kalos will be a completely new take on the formula, expanding itself to a much more cohesive, singular open world closer to that of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet (2023).
The symbolism in the logo implies that the story will follow research into Zygarde, hence the hexagonal black and green patterns on the typography. Especially with a Pokémon that remains mainly a mystery in its original region, there are many ways the story could go. All that is for sure is that fans are excited to see where this Kalos title will go.
The game is said to be in development, releasing worldwide sometime in 2025.
