Shin Megami Tensei V (2021) makes its daring return with a bold new definitive edition titled Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance this year!
What is Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance?
Shin Megami Tensei V is a title in the long-running Atlus series, Shin Megami Tensei, which debuted all the way back in 1987 with Digital Devil Monogatari: Megami Tensei. With its success, many more games in this JRPG format would sprout over the years under similar names, and even sprout popular spin-offs such as the Soul Hackers, Digital Devil Saga, and Persona series.
The latest entry in the franchise, Shin Megami Tensei V, follows a blue-haired high school student who along with a few friends, gets mysteriously transported to Da’at, an apocalyptic version of Tokyo currently in the midst of war. Fighting between Angels and Demons, the protagonist finds a way to gain mysterious powers, granting the ability to become a Nahobino and control demons with the divine knowledge of good and evil.
Vengeance takes this story and adds upon it; Including the original game’s DLC in a single package, as well as adding another story taking place during the same time period. More DLC stories were also announced in a spotlight video, with the inclusion of Dagda from Shin Megami Tensei 4 and a new demon under the name Konohanasakuya.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance Release Date
Proving as a definitive edition with new inclusions, this game’s release date seems much sooner than anticipated. Atlus’ lineup of games is filled with amazing titles this year, including this new release dropping on June 21st, 2024. Alongside Unicorn Overlord, and Metaphor Re:Fantazio, hardcore Atlus fans still have a lot to look forward to in the coming year.
New Inclusions and Changes
From the initial release, players will have access to a new story taking place in Tokyo. This new rendition of the netherworld will be available to start from the title screen, with or without having completed the main story. Although there’s tweaks and quality of life improvements in the main title, along with about 40 new demons across both stories, anyone who’s played the original has the option to jump head first into the definitive version’s exclusive stories. Also, Nintendo Switch owners can carry over some save data from the base game.
One of the new characters got some great time in the spotlight; Yoko. This new student seems to have mysteriously entered the same world as the protagonist, and has gained similar abilities. Though it’s not set in stone yet, speculation leads many fans to believe that she may be a new protagonist, at least for a small period of time.
Other new inclusions include a new Da’at, many new world maps, an array of new quests, and ally demons gaining their own special skills for use in combat. Overall, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance seems to be building up to become the best SMTV package out there.
