We spoke with voice actor Jessica Calvello about Attack on Titan as well as her career in voice acting. Jessica is known for voicing Hange in Attack on Titan.
Actor Spotlight: Jessica Calvello
Jessica Calvello has been in the acting and entertainment industry for a long time. We asked her about when she knew she wanted to be a voice actor. Jessica talked about how she has always loved performing and has been doing so her entire life.
“I took a ton of voice classes in college. I mean, I have an acting degree. So, I’ve just been doing it my whole life. So the transition for me for performing mostly with my body and face over to microphone and voice, it really wasn’t that tough of a transition for me. And I fell in love with it.”
Attack on Titan
Attack on Titan first aired in 2013. The anime series is based on a manga of the same name created by Hajime Isayama. Humanity is forced to live behind giant walls in order to keep man-eating titans out of their cities.
Jessica voices Hange, a character that makes their appearance in season one. Hange is both a squad leader in the military that fights to protect humanity from the titans as well as a scientist who specializes in titan research.
When it comes to Hange, Jessica explains that she still doesn’t have the words to explain how thankful she is to have voiced such an iconic character in such a brilliant series. We asked what it was like to record Hange’s final lines after taking this decade-long journey with them.
“I had a lot of trouble with it because it’s a decade. It’s a decade-long…story that I became invested in from the beginning. Like I said, I didn’t know who had the dub. I was just like, ‘I want to be part of this story. This is an amazing show.’ …and the day came, and…I actually had to leave this booth for about ten minutes ‘cause I kept crying.”
