Currently Aniplex’s biggest product, Demon Slayer (written by mangaka Koyoharu Gotogue) is the big event of the season whenever it comes out. Breaking records in the box office with its film Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train, and becoming one of the best anime to push graphics software of modern times, Demon Slayer has gained notoriety among the entire anime community, being a gateway for many prospective weebs. Its simplistic but emotional characters and its fascinating world of breathing styles and blood-demon arts creates a great, classic shonen for anyone to jump into. With a little bit of gore as the cherry on top.

Follow the story of Tanjiro Kamado, a boy living a simple life in the mountains with his family as he is thrust into the role of the Demon Slayer Corps. After a massacre while exporting wood, Tanjiro finds all of his family dead except for one sibling: his sister Nezuko, who’s turned into a demon. Follow the story of Tanjiro trying to find a cure for his sister’s form-morphing disease as he hunts down Muzan Kubutsuji, the demon who killed his family. With amazing elemental sword powers under his belt, find out how Tanjiro becomes one of the Hashira while discovering the mystery of his little sister’s condition.

With the success of Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles (2021), it’s no wonder that the franchise decided to delve deep into the video game landscape. Yet the jump from a 3D arena fighter like every other anime fighting game to an entirely different, more light-hearted style of a minigame-based party board game seems like a little bit of a jump. Don’t fret though, because the style of the original series emanates throughout the first announcement trailer.

With what fans gained from this small trailer, it’s easy to see what style this game is going to follow. The definition example of this genre (the Mario Party series) follows characters traversing through a large space set up like a board game, with dice rolled to decide how far one person can go during their turn, and which space they land on. From the bits and pieces of Demon Slayer’s rendition, their approach seems very similar, yet instead of rolling balls and whack-a-mole, the minigames reference events found throughout the anime. From swiping the heads off of Tanjiro’s first real demon encounter, to boss demon spaces, and a day-night cycle system, Demon Slayer: Aim for the Strongest looks as if it will establish itself as a creative take on this popularized genre.

Playable characters shown at this time are Tanjiro Kamado, the scaredy-cat Zenitsu Agatsuma, the brash Inosuke Hashibara, and everyone’s favorite brooding water hashira, Giyu Tomioka. While Sabito, Makomo, Tengen Uzui, Kyojiro Rengoku, Sakonji Urokodaki and Nezuko Kamado make an appearance, it is currently unknown if they will be playable, or if they are left to a supporting cast role.

As the subtle little click at the beginning of the trailer suggests, the Demon Slayer Board-Party game will be released on the Nintendo Switch family of systems! With enhanced motion-tracking capability through the joycons shown in the trailer, the minigames are going to utilize all that the system has to offer. From really making it feel like you’re swinging a nichirin sword to physically rolling some dice, there’s a lot of possibilities for fun anime-inspired microgames.

Fans have a good bit to be excited about, delving into a new space for anime video games. And what better product than with everyone’s favorite demon slayers? Look out for Demon Slayer: Aim for the Strongest releasing exclusively on Nintendo Switch in 2024! Keep a sharp eye out for more news coming from Aniplex on YouTube.
