The first teaser trailer for Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim anime, now officially titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, has been released, giving fans a first look at the upcoming show.
Scott Pilgrim Anime: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
Both the beloved cult classic 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and the new anime are based on the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley. He and BenDavid Grabinski are serving as showrunners and co-writers for the eight episode series. Edgar Wright, director of the 2010 live action adaptation, is returning as an executive producer on the project. The animation is being done by Japanese animation studio Science SARU (known for the 2023 Golden Globe nominated Inu-Oh), and the studio’s Abel Góngora is directing.
Like the film, the anime will follow the titular Scott Pilgrim, a slacker and part-time musician who has fallen in love with Ramona Flowers, his literal dream girl. However, before they can be together he must battle his way through Ramona’s seven evil exes, while simultaneously attempting to win a recording contract with his band Sex Bob-Omb.
The new trailer shows off the stylized animation and some quick looks at the video game-esque fight scenes the story is known for. It also gives viewers a taste of the music the show will feature. American pop-rock band Anamanaguchi (who previously created the soundtrack for the video game Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game) will be providing the original songs, while the score will be done by both Anamanaguchi and composer Joseph Trapanese.
A majority of the original film cast will be returning to voice their animated characters, including Michael Sera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Ellen Wong as Knives Chau, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Jason Schwartzmen as Gideon Graves, Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Brie Larson as Natalie V. “Envy” Adams, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, and Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is set to premiere on Netflix on November 17.
