Suzume Film Earns $2.8M in US Box Office Opening Weekend

This past Friday, the latest masterpiece from Makoto Shinkai graced theaters worldwide. According to Box Office Mojo, Suzume has earned $2,830,000 in the US & Canada and $146,120,027 worldwide in its opening weekend.

Suzume (also known as Suzume no Tojimari) is described as follows:

As the skies turn red and the planet trembles, Japan stands on the brink of disaster. However, a determined teenager named Suzume sets out on a mission to save her country. Able to see supernatural forces that others cannot, it’s up to her to close the mysterious doors that are spreading chaos across the land. A perilous journey awaits as the fate of Japan rests on her shoulders.

The anime film was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, who is known for heart wrenching anime films like your name., Weathering With You, the Garden of Words, and 5 Centimeters per Second.

Suzume has had a great reception so far, with high ratings across various platforms. Currently, IMDb rates Suzume at 7.8/10, MyAnimeList rates it as 8.5/10, and Rotten Tomatoes has a Tomatometer of 95% and Audience Score of 98%. It’s already been nominated at the Berlin International Film Festival as a 2023 Nominee for the Golden Berlin Bear for Best Film.
