The battles ahead are not for the faint of heart, so stock up on potions! Ever since its debut in 2002, the Kingdom Hearts series has had many difficult bosses during its run. But the most difficult bosses come in the form of the secret bosses. These bosses put your skills to the test and often prove to be more than challenging.
5. Sephiroth, Kingdom Hearts
In the franchise’s debut game, one of the first secret bosses introduced into the games was Sephiroth, the main antagonist from Final Fantasy VII and one of many crossover characters. He is a brutal opponent and one that can’t be fought with brute force, much like the other entries. Players should focus on using Strike Raid or Sonic Blade whenever possible for good damage. It’s also suggested to have a powerful Keyblade to increase your damage output, such as Ultima Weapon. Combine these tricks with some good healing magic, potions, and patience and Sephiroth can be defeated.
4. Armor of Eraqus, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep: Final Mix
The Armor of Eraqus is a boss that truly varies based on which character you are using. Personally, the boss is the hardest as Terra and is a true test of patience. Even with Ultima Weapon or Royal Radiance, players will deal mere chip damage. The best strategy is to have the abilities Second Chance, Once More, Leaf Bracer, and Damage Syphon. These abilities ensure you will have a greater chance at surviving the armor’s combos and moves and Damage Syphon ensures a refill on your Focus meter if he lands his hits on the player.
Using Shotlocks is key to this fight. But what makes the fight with Terra harder is the lack of invincibility frames in Terra’s dodge. Even while dodging, the armor can land many hits or ensnare Terra in its chains before slamming a massive piece of the ground onto Terra, resulting in an instant defeat. But if you take your time and Shotlock when needed, the Armor of Eraqus can be slain.
3. Lingering Will, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
The Lingering Will has become one of the most notorious bosses in the series for good reason. It is completely unpredictable, and all of its attacks pack a massive punch. If players falter for even a millisecond, that minuscule wasted time can spell the Lingering Will’s victory. The most common strategy for the fight is to use the Fenrir Keyblade for its Negative Combo ability, while also stacking it with the other Negative Combos that players can obtain through other means. You must also remove any Combo Plus abilities. By doing this, every move Sora does in a standard combo is simply going to be the finishing move of the combo.
This move staggers the Lingering Will, and if players time their attacks properly, they could potentially beat the boss without taking any damage, though this does take time and proper timing. If you don’t want to cheese the fight, then stack up on potions, elixirs, support abilities, and a Keyblade with good stats and give the Lingering Will a run for its money.
2. Mysterious Figure, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Final Mix
The Mysterious Figure is one of the most unforgiving secret bosses. Much like the Armor of Eraqus, this boss is hardest as Terra, for much of the same reasons as stated above. But this boss is a master class in timing your attacks and blocks. It is recommended to have the same abilities as the armor boss fight, sans the Damage Syphon since Shotlocks are useless here. Using Aqua and Ven makes the fight more manageable due to their dodges having invincibility frames, unlike Terra. The key to this fight is to be quicker than the Mysterious Figure, which is a challenge in itself, and to use Thunder Surge when the enemy stands still for some of its attacks.
With Thunder Surge also categorized as a physical attack, it is recommended to utilize a Keyblade that boosts the Strength stat. Once the Mysterious Figure turns invisible, this is where patience becomes key. Wait it out, and when it becomes visible again, put the Mysterious Figure in its place!
1. Yozora, Kingdom Hearts III: ReMind
This boss is truly a test of everything the player has learned from not just Kingdom Hearts III, but from the series as a whole. Yozora is a jack of all trades. He is fast, strong, unpredictable, and full of surprises. Potions, elixirs, and ethers are a must for this fight, along with any and all support abilities you can equip.
The strategy I’ve seen used the most is to use the Ariel Link to summon Princess Ariel and stun Yozora with her attacks. Use an ether to restore your MP meter and repeat the Ariel move. If this strategy doesn’t work for you, then this is a fight where you must put the pedal to the metal. Block when you can, attack when you can, and heal when you can. As stated before, Yozora is a wild card and a very tough one at that. But if you have mastered your skills and patience, then Yozora can become another victory under your belt.
