To Achieve Harmony
If cursed energy is the source of continued conflict between the sorcerers and the Simurians, it only makes sense to eliminate that source. Doing so has huge implications, and Maru and Yuji wrestle with the consequences of their actions.

When last we left the story, Yuji, Maru, and Mahito met in a suspended space where souls converge. Mahito tries to get revenge on Yuji but is swiftly dealt with. After subduing Mahito, Maru and Yuji lay out the plan for eliminating cursed spirits. They’ll alter the souls of the Japanese and Simurians so no cursed energy is produced, thereby preventing cursed spirits from being created.
Yuji brings up his reservations about the plan very eloquently. He’s worried that Maru’s plan will end up robbing the world of potential benefits in the future, not to mention the huge violation of people’s bodily autonomy. Even so, Yuji ultimately agrees with Maru’s sentiment and actions. Then he drops the bombshell that, even if they succeed, cursed spirits may still be created.
Two Sides to Every Argument
This chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo was heavy in dialogue, but at least we got some incredible action panels from Iwasaki (artist). I don’t think anyone was surprised that Mahito lost so quickly, but the way he lost was so poetic. You could call it overkill, but that just goes to show how much Yuji has grown. For an opponent that used to give him so much trouble, Mahito really should have let sleeping dogs lie.
In the following scene, between Yuji and Maru, we slow down to dive deeper into the plan. These kinds of scenes not only help the readers re-establish their understanding of the world, but they also establish the characters’ points of view. Maru is still clinging to a very idealistic view of coexistence. His resolve shows in the fact that he’s willing to go this far, even jeopardizing his own people’s beliefs.
Yuji, while still very straightforward and honest, has hardened into a very pragmatic person. His extended life has given him time to observe the world through an objective lens, which in turn informs his counterpoints to Maru’s plans. At the end of the day, Akutami (writer) shines best when he can take time to blend exposition and character motivation.
