JJK Modulo Chapter 17 Review

A Fateful Return

The queen has entered the building! Don’t call it a comeback because she never left. Tsurugi is on the ropes and has no choice but to tap into the power of the cursed spirit who started it all.

SPOILER WARNING!

During his fight with Maru, Tsurugi reflects on his father’s strange disappearance. After Yuka was born, he was seen speaking with a hooded man with a scar on his mouth. Then he just left. Tsurugi suspects that life would have been much different if he had been born with a cursed technique.

Tsurugi is up against the ropes. Maru’s power to warp gravity and manipulate objects is too much for Tsurugi to handle. After a devastating attack, Tsurugi begs for someone, anyone, to lend him power. Then a voice calls from the darkness. Rika, the cursed spirit bound to Yuta Okkotsu’s ring, appears and fuses with Tsurugi, giving him a surge of cursed energy and strength. The battle continues.

Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned

I’m sure for devoted fans, Rika’s return was only a matter of time. As a quick refresher, Rika is a special grade vengeful cursed spirit bound to Yuta Okkotsu, Tsurugi and Yuka’s grandfather. When she was alive, Rika was Yuta’s childhood friend, and they harbored secret feelings for each other. After her tragic death, Yuta’s grief bound her spirit to him, symbolized by his ring. Throughout Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Jujutsu Kaisen, Rika displayed incredible strength and versatile techniques, granting her the moniker “Queen of Curses.”

What a way to raise the stakes and action even more! It’s crazy to think that both Yuka and Tsurugi inherited two of the most powerful cursed spirits ever seen. Something tells me that’s no coincidence. With the introduction of Tsurugi’s father and the strange circumstances surrounding the Okkotsu family, it’s clear something is amiss. Not to mention Yuji’s appearance. Akutami (writer) has always had a soft spot for complex world-building, especially when it comes to generational trauma. I suspect there are more surprises and revelations yet to come.

Once again, Iwasaki (artist) is knocking it out of the park. The action is detailed, bombastic, and wonderfully chaotic. Maru’s power makes for such a surreal battleground. The ever-shifting angles and perspectives put the reader right in the heart of the action. Even at its most extreme, Iwasaki managed to keep everything cohesive and understandable. And seeing Rika’s design merged with Tsurugi was the icing on the cake.

The fight rages on, now with 100% more cursed spirits. It makes me wonder if Maru and Dabura have anything up their sleeves. How will they respond to these power scaling developments? Catch up on the story by visiting the official Viz Media manga webpage for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.
