Warning: Mentions of blood, death and violence. Anime listed may not be suitable for younger audiences.

Best Modern Gory Anime

For anime lovers of the modern titles, the list begins with some of the more popular and trending titles.

1. Chainsaw Man

Coming in at Number one, the most anticipated series of the month, is Chainsaw Man. While it is only the first season, it scores at the top. Denji is seeking a better life, having lived an unjust and unfulfilling existence. After a series of unfortunate events and betrayal by the Yakuza, fate brings a twist of unexpectedness when he fuses with his devil-dog companion, Pochita. Denji’s unbelievable transformation makes him a human-devil hybrid. As the title suggests, Denji can turn parts of his body into chainsaws, becoming a Chainsaw Man.

He joins the sector of the Public Safety Devil Hunters organization under the coercion of the seductive, mysterious Makima, hunting devils of the world that feed on human fear. This series continues its unraveling story later this month with the release of Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.

2. Jujutsu Kaisen

Sitting at number two is a dark, bloody, action-packed series focused on the negative human emotions, which birthed the cursed energy of the world. Good and bad or light and dark. Is it the works of the devil or just a streak of bad luck? That answer lies in the spirit of Yuji Itadori. A thoughtless choice leads to Yuji becoming the host of the most powerful curse known, Sukuna. Yuji, unmindful of consequences, swallowed a cursed object. This object, cursed and dark, is none other than Sukuna’s own cursed finger.

Yuji lives by the code of honoring his grandfather’s memory. He devotes his life to protecting his friends and doing the right thing, leading him to join a secret organization of Jujutsu Sorcerers. Yuji is unique, being only good in spirit. This drives his dedication to combat the ongoing fight against other curses relentlessly. Yuji’s personal and ultimate goal is to consume all of Sukuna’s fingers, putting an end to the eternal battle. Will Yuji’s spirit be enough to defeat the King of Curses?

3. Hell’s Paradise: Jigokurako

Coming in at number three involves none other than a party of death-row, blood-lusted convicts and their executioners. Who else is needed when planning to fight grotesque monsters in an assassin fashion? Sent to a mysterious and undeniably dangerous island, rumored or lied to be a paradise, this party of murderers, convicts, and lawbreakers fight their way to death or freedom to retrieve the elixir of life – immortality.

The fight for liberty is dangled at the infamous shinobi, known to be ruthless and emotionless, Gabimaru the Hollow. The fearsome shinobi is offered a pardon, but only if he succeeds in the mission to find and bring back the elixir of life, which is, coincidentally, his only hope of reuniting with his wife. However, the island holds more than mystery and immortality. The island incites the worst of humanity, forcing all in the party to battle each other and its demon-monster guardians to the death. It is a fight for survival to find the elixir of life.

4. Dorohedoro

Marking the fourth spot is for those who enjoy a dark comedy. Caiman, a lizard-headed man, is seeking out his lost memories. He is on the search to find the sorcerer who cursed him into his existence. Together with his friend Nikaido, they search their city, known as “The Hole,” to kill any sorcerers who may have been the maledictor, by brutally biting off their suspects’ heads. A mind-bending adventure, which began as Caiman’s personal conflict, ignites the fight between humans and magic users.

5. Tokyo Ghoul

Number five is a personal favorite of mine. There is not just gore and bloodlust, but a sprinkle of psychological thrill. A fateful date with a ghoul causes Ken Kaneki to become a half-ghoul, who must survive by eating human flesh. Ken must hide his ghoul identity from humans and conceal his existence around ghouls as he stands between two worlds. Ken learns to adapt to his existence and to control his newfound ghoul power thanks to the Anteiku, who give him refuge. Beyond the balance of two worlds, Ken must also fight the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG), who hunt to extinguish ghouls. The duality of nature and the struggle of personal humanity are exposed in images of cannibalism and the predator-prey cycles.

6. Akame Ga Kill

Number six lands with brutal deaths, action-packed fights, and the rebellion spirit to overthrow corruption. Tatsumi seeks to join the Night Raid in hopes of ending its brutality. The corrupted Imperial government led by Prime Minister Honest murders his friends, motivating Tatsumi to stand against the injustice. Tatsumi must come to terms with the morality of being an assassin and its challenges, while battling powerful enemies, like the Teigu. There is not just death, but hits of brutal realities and images of warfare.

7. Deadman Wonderland

Landing at the final spot, number seven, a red figure frames a young boy. The wrongly convicted middle-school student named Ganta Igarashi, who is believed to have murdered his entire class, is sentenced to life in prison. Although just a boy, Ganta is sent to Deadman Wonderland‘s ‘Death Sentence’ where a lethal poison is constantly injected into his bloodstream through the collar. However, this deadly poison can be neutralized if one takes a strange candy-like remedy every three days, which can be earned through work or a particular purchase. The bizarre prison is almost like an amusement park where deadly games of survival and lethal means are the currency.

Ganta knows he must survive the barbaric, cruel jail to find the true killer. But is the cryptic red figure who framed him someone he knows? Fortunately, Ganta finds aid and refuge in a mysterious girl named Shiro, who happens to be unknown to the other prisoners, yet knows Ganta and seeks to help him. Shiro is just as tangled in Ganta’s life as she is in her own purpose for being in the prison. The bloodthirst is everywhere, plainly in sight in this anime, but especially in the blood.

Top Classic Gory Anime

Diving into some more classical anime, the list visits some of the less trending titles.

1. Elfen Lied

Credit: Arms Studio Guts

This classic scores the top spot for classic gory anime. It is not just the tragic and psychological story or the exploding bodies. It is that gore is the core of this story. Lucy, a mutant human with horns, escapes a research facility. The research facility holds all people like Lucy as test subjects for the government. Lucy is a Diclonius rejected by humans, forced into isolation and alienation. The discrimination she faces for her two elf-like horns, also called vectors, turns her life down a path of murderous vengeance.

Lucy begins to experience a split personality, one violent and sadistic, who unleashes “Silpelits” born like her to dominate Earth, and an innocent, naive alter persona called “Nyu”. Lucy encounters two teenagers, Kouta and Yuka, who decide to adopt “Nyu”. While friendship grows between the three characters, ultimately their lives become intertwined not just with their present, but also with Lucy’s dark and murderous past. The series explores a complex range of elements, setting the stage for the consequences of trauma.

2. Corpse Party: Tortured Souls

Sliding to the second spot of classics is Corpse Party: Tortured Souls. This series almost took first place. Corpse Party is a short series of four episodes focused on the group of Kisaragi Academy high school students who perform a ritual charm called “Sachiko Ever After”. While the ritual was supposed to be a rite binding all to stay friends, it instead teleported the group to the haunted Heavenly Host Elementary School.

The unhallowed grounds unlock actual hell and horror for the students, as spirits of the murdered unleash a living nightmare of bloodstained halls, undead, and gruesome tests preying upon the students. This series is actual gore and horror, a warning for viewers of shocking, savage, and vivid imagery, based on the terrifying video game of the same name.

3. Higurashi no Naku Koro (When They Cry)

Credit: Studio Deen

Another game-based anime lands the third and final spot for this list. This supernatural series centers around a group of friends from Hinamizawa, a village that is secluded and peaceful. The peace is a blanket for the hidden darkness. While seemingly normal, every year during the annual festival, brutal murders and tragic disappearances occur. The ongoing time loops and dark hidden truths cause paranoia and psychological distress in the group of teens as they work to solve the mystery. Will the consequences of dark, horrific secrets that unravel tragic outcomes and terror for the students be too much?

So, whether you’re deep into the spooky season or just jumping in for a spine-chilling horror, there is a gory anime waiting to open its doorway to the supernatural, lying within its imagery and story. Unleash the touch of bloodlust and eerie atmosphere as the listed titles are perfect for setting the dark mood. These anime lists can help transport you into whatever vibe you seek this Halloween.
