Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 2 Review

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

Recap

You got your politics in my shonen! In chapter 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, the Japanese government walks a tightrope of diplomatic relations with the Simurians. Their power is so overwhelming that they’re classified as special grade curses on par with Ryomen Sukuna. Usami, the Okkotsu siblings’ handler, places his hopes in their hands to befriend Maru.

Yuka and Tsurugi have their own doubts about the alien situation and interrogate the human trafficker they detained in chapter 1. They see for themselves one of the Simurians’ space ships and resolve to handle whatever comes next. Afterwards, Tsurugi gets the cold shoulder from Cross, Maru’s brother, thinking it’s Maru, which ticks him off.

Review

Compared to the average 17-19 pages most weekly manga chapters get, chapter 2 of JJK Modulo has 25 pages. Akutami can convey much more of the story this way, but most scenes remain bloated with dialogue and exposition. There are moments where characters will interject their personalities into the conversation, which helps break up the discussions.

So far, Yuka and Tsurugi have been very competent in their duties, so I’m interested to see more of their individuality as characters. Maru being at odds with his own brother is a great way to create investment that mirrors the Okkotsu sibling rivalry. I’m looking forward to seeing Yuka, Tsurugi and Maru interact more.

Iwasaki’s illustrations are sharp and defined with some very creative visual storytelling. The designs for the new Simurians are great, too, with the horned one being just as intimidating as Sukuna. I especially like how expressive Iwasaki makes the eyes. Each character maintains a specific eye and pupil shape, but by manipulating their positions and shading, it’s easy to see how characters react to things. I do hope we get some more action soon, or at least some slice of life hijinks.
