Where We Left Off

The threat of Muzan is larger than ever for the Hashiras, picking up directly after the events of the Hashira training arc – the fourth season of Demon Slayer. Muzan retreats into his dimensional blood art stronghold, the Infinity Castle, trapping the Demon Slayer Corps inside to battle to the death. The Demon Slayers become separated and must battle numerous demons, including the outstandingly powerful upper-rank demons, the Twelve Kizuki, as they search for Muzan.

The Hashiras lead the operation to kill Muzan, with Tamayo administering her four-stage incapacitating drug. Muzan’s weakened state forces him to absorb Tamayo into his flesh cocoon. Was Tamayo’s sacrifice enough?

Shinobu's Promise

In the first battle, Shinobu sets out facing Douma, the upper-rank two demon who killed her sister, promising to avenge Kanae’s horrific death. Douma is revealed to use an ice-based fan technique. His fans are wicked sharp. Shinobu fights to overcome not just an overly powerful demon, but also her own personal sense of inferiority, cursing her lack of ability and short stature. Shinobu sees Kanae’s spirit, helping Shinobu to break through her barriers. Shinobu realizes she cannot win a one-on-one fight, but determined to fight for her sister’s memory, she overcomes her inner battle of inferiority by turning herself into a living weapon.

Shinobu saturates her entire body in the potent wisteria-based poison she concocted, converting all of her last will and energy into one final forceful, fatal attack. Douma is not able to detox the poison. Shinobu’s intellect and medical expertise shine, as she sacrifices herself to protect those she loves, even signaling to Kanao a crucial warning. While Shinobu’s sword skill, agility, and quick speed were not enough for her to defeat Douma, her creativity and ingenuity may just be the secret.

Zenitsu’s Awakening

Zenitsu battles Kaigaku, the upper-rank six, who is also his former superior and training companion. Zenitsu’s typical cowardly, weak and unseemingly powerful nature is erased. As Zenitsu begins his journey into the Infinity Castle, we see a new, more focused, serious, mature, and almost confident Zenitsu. He heads almost knowingly into the battle, determined to find someone, his former senior disciple Kaigaku. The fight between the two former disciples is intensely personal. Kaigaku is disgusted by Zenitsu and their roles as equals.

Kaigaku constantly belittles Zenitsu, disparaging and discrediting all of his effort and ability as a future Hashira. While initially reluctant to truly fight Kaigaku, Zenitsu realizes there is no saving Kaigaku. Kaigaku believes he will kill Zenitsu, targeting him in battle with his most brazen attack – Heat Lightning. However, Zenitsu awakens to avenge his former master, Gramps. Manifesting his personal, newly invented Seventh-Form of Thunder Breathing – God of Fire Thunder, Zenitsu showcases the greatest extent of his abilities in a blitz of electrifying power, beheading Kaigaku. Zenitsu has awakened into a powerful, electrifying Hashira.

Giyuu and Tanjiro’s Face-off With Akaza

Tanjiro and Giyuu balance between the ever-shifting castle, leading to a confrontational fight with the prodigious upper-rank three, Akaza. An intensely physical and emotional battle through the labyrinth unfolds between Akaza and the Demon Slayer duo Giyuu and Tanjiro. A martial arts master, Akaza uses his Destructive Death techniques, creating debilitating shockwaves from his kicks and punches. Akaza defines what it means to be upper-three.

Giyuu counters Akaza with the prime use of his Water Breathing techniques honed by his immense strength and speed. Tanjiro joins the fight, displaying his rapid growth and further impressing Akaza by dodging his attacks and even slicing off his arm with his new impressive skillset. Tanjiro’s presence and words trigger something deep in Akaza. Akaza begins to fight his inner mental philosophy, unnerving him in battle and solidifying Tanjiro as his nemesis.

Giyuu awakens his Demon Slayer mark, appearing as a smooth water design with three dots on his left cheek, leading to an increase in endurance, speed, agility, and exacting precision. This elevation of skill was sure to be the outclass needed. The fighting appears to be one on equal ground until Tanjiro senses there is something amiss.

Akaza manages to counter Giyuu at every turn. Akaza is revealed to manifest a snowflake compass from his body, which allows him to track his opponents, predict attacks, and determine any weaknesses in their fighting spirit. Akaza can match every exact movement, countering with enhanced precision and accuracy that is adaptable and learns from the opponent. Any possible gaps are closed and met.

The fight continues to escalate, tiring the Demon Slayers and leading to a critical moment that changes the tide of the battle. Tanjiro remembers the words of his father, helping him to enter the Transparent World where all is visible. It is a state of the impossible. Tanjiro uses this newfound ability to decapitate Akaza in a single sword movement.

However, Akaza’s body refuses to give up, regenerating and continuing to fight even after its beheading. Akaza begins to regain his memories, causing an inner spirit battle for the upper-rank. Akaza’s dedication to becoming the strongest forces him to relive his previous life in his mind, ultimately prompting him to fatally self-destruct. Akaza, guided by the spirits of his loved ones, specifically his love Koyuki, finds peace and reconciliation, compelling him to accept death to be with them. Amazed at what they just witnessed, Giyuu and Tanjiro collapse from exhaustion.

Conclusion

The movie concludes with the ravens proclaiming the upper-three, Akaza’s defeat, as the other ongoing battles continue. Kokushibo becomes enraged as he and Douma sense Akaza’s death. Muzan is more confident than ever in his victory, despite the loss of Akaza. We end seeing Muzan entrapping himself and the slayers into his dimensional blood art stronghold, the Infinity Castle, now a cube. As of now, there is no defeat of the Demon King.
